A woman says famed astrophysicist\u00a0Neil deGrasse Tyson<\/strong> drugged and raped her when they were both grad students in 1984, and you\u2019re about to hear her tell the story in her own words.<\/p>\n
Her name is Tchiya Amet<\/strong>, and she\u2019s a musician<\/a> who once studied Galactic Astronomy in the graduate program at University of Texas in Austin. Amet says Tyson slipped her a \u201cMickey<\/em>,\u201d a drug used to incapacitate victims of sexual assault, and caused her to drop out of school.<\/p>\n
Until the alleged incident, Amet \u2014 who reportedly changed her name from Staci Hambric \u2014 says she was on track to becoming the world\u2019s first black female astronaut. But afterward, she dropped out of the program, suffered from PTSD, and sought therapy repeatedly.<\/p>\n
I first reported on her story<\/a> almost exactly a year ago, but since then we conducted a phone interview, revealing even more information I felt was worth sharing. Here\u2019s the discussion:<\/p>\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The Alleged Encounter<\/h2>\nThe tragic story begins at the\u00a0University of Texas at Austin, where Amet says she and Tyson studied astronomy. I was able to use the <a href=\"http:\/\/utdirect.utexas.edu\/registrar\/degv.WBX?fbclid=IwAR2mYZdoHrFV53ZmeLej1s5SajlE2ze2Tqi57xtpgom-9vIV6casdBlV6uQ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">school\u2019s records<\/a> to confirm that Tyson and \u201cStaci Hambric\u201d both attended the university during the time period of the alleged assault.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/utdirect.utexas.edu\/registrar\/degv.WBX?fbclid=IwAR2mYZdoHrFV53ZmeLej1s5SajlE2ze2Tqi57xtpgom-9vIV6casdBlV6uQ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2535\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/780\/2018\/11\/Staci-Hambric-Registration-Record.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"427\"><\/a><\/p>\nAmet says it was at this school that\u00a0Tyson befriended\u00a0\u2014 and ultimately raped\u00a0\u2014 her. She told me she was at his apartment when he offered her water, and the next thing she remembered was waking up to an assault.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\u201cI woke up in his bed; I was naked<\/strong>\u2026\u00a0When he saw that I had woken up, he got on top of me and mounted me<\/strong>, and I passed out again.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nAmet also sent me this photo, which she says is Tyson in his apartment around the time of the incident.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_345\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-345\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/780\/2017\/10\/tyson-in-apt-1984-e1508808349154.jpg\" alt=\"This is Tyson in his apartment where the alleged incident took place, according to Amet.\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is Tyson in his apartment where the alleged incident took place, according to Amet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nAfter the alleged rape, Amet says she confronted Tyson in the halls at UT Austin. She reportedly asked him \u201chow this happened and why it happened<\/em>,\u201d and he responded in part, that it was because they are \u201cin this together<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\u201cI didn\u2019t tell anybody because when I had been an undergrad, I had some issues of molestation by a student and a faculty member, and when I went to report it to the authorities, they both told me not to say anything because it would ruin the person\u2019s life<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Public Confrontation<\/h2>\nAmet says the next time she confronted Tyson was in public, at a NOVA event in California. She publicly accused Tyson of raping her in front of a live audience in 2010.<\/p>\n<blockquote>I didn\u2019t know if anybody would hear me, but I said, \u201cToday is national sexual assault awareness day in national sexual assault awareness month and I\u2019m here because when I was a grad student at UT Austin in 1984 you raped me<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nI can\u2019t say with certainty whether the content of her announcement was accurate or not, but I\u00a0was\u00a0<\/em>able to confirm that she made the speech in the first place. At least one person remembers the whole encounter pretty vividly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2547\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jillusiveman.tumblr.com\/post\/167165933641\/shatteredzydrateteacup-kn207\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2547\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/780\/2018\/11\/TumblrNDTlecture.jpg\" alt=\"Tumblr SS\" width=\"768\" height=\"608\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I have been unable to get in touch with the author of this post, and I\u2019m still looking for more information. If you know anything, please contact me.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Why it\u2019s Important<\/h2>\nSince I first wrote about this allegation last year, a lot of people have asked\u00a0why<\/em> I decided to help Amet tell her story. After all, I\u2019ve always been a huge fan of Tyson. I have shared his quotes countless times, and I even have multiple shirts that feature his face. But I consider this to be something entirely unrelated to how much I love Tyson\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2565\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2565\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/780\/2018\/11\/Pic-with-Tyson.jpg\" alt=\"Me with Tyson in 2013.\" width=\"768\" height=\"479\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Me with Tyson in 2013.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe fact is that I\u00a0was left with relatively no choice in reporting this. I say that because I firmly believe that allegations of sexual assault should be\u00a0investigated<\/em>, yet in this case it doesn\u2019t seem like that ever happened. I have actually seen numerous reports that go out of their way to say the claims\u00a0shouldn\u2019t<\/em> be investigated in any way.<\/p>\nOne atheist site published\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/godlessmom.com\/allegations-neil-tyson-different-weinstein-toback\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">How The Allegations Against Neil Tyson Are Different From Those Against Weinstein & Toback<\/a>, which specifically states, \u201cPeople can and do lie<\/em>.\u201d Skeptic writer PZ Myers<\/strong> went even further, mentioning her accusations in a blog post called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/freethoughtblogs.com\/pharyngula\/2016\/01\/27\/disgraceful-exploitation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Disgraceful Exploitation<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>A woman says she was raped by Neil deGrasse Tyson in grad school. She contacted me and asked me to share her story. But here\u2019s the disgraceful exploitation that\u2019s going on<\/strong>.<\/p>\nShe did not know who I am, at all. She came to me because she was advised to\u2026by slymepitters. The same people who have been indignant for years that women might speak out against harassers. They are trying to deploy this woman as a weapon<\/strong>.<\/p>\nNow, unfortunately, I looked at her story<\/strong>. I can\u2019t say she\u2019s wrong, and she\u2019s definitely sincere, and I can\u2019t rule out the possibility, but her supporting evidence is terribly weak<\/strong>: it\u2019s her personal testimony, which I do not reject, with no other evidence. Her web page does not help her case at all, either \u2014 it\u2019s a lot of astrology, and a scattering of youtube videos that are completely irrelevant to her claim<\/strong>. That\u2019s it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nIt\u2019s worth mentioning that I asked Amet about her spiritual beliefs, and she said she took them on\u00a0after<\/em> the alleged incident as a form of \u201chealing.\u201d A private investigator I\u2019m working with on this case says that\u00a0could<\/em> be a coping mechanism if she was victimized.<\/p>\n<h2>No Investigation<\/h2>\nAmet has continually spoken out for years, making separate blog posts in 2014, 2016, and 2017.\u00a0 She even filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/tchiya.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/15\/end-the-silence-end-the-violence-the-blue-lotus-speaks-chapter-2\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">police report<\/a>, despite the fact that the statute of limitations on her criminal claims had expired (If more victims come forward, that limitation could be voided). Yet no one is investigating, and some people <a href=\"https:\/\/arroseinaprose.org\/2018\/04\/20\/neil-degrasse-tyson-and-rape-why-has-no-one-investigated-this-allegation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wonder why<\/a>.<\/p>\nReporters could be hesitant to talk about this because of their love for Tyson, or because of their distrust in spiritual individuals, but no matter what, it is completely unacceptable. I\u2019m not saying you should\u00a0believe<\/em> Amet 100% and take her story at face value because I\u2019m not doing that.
