They help us serve the needs of our neighbors and lead to human flourishing both for the individual and for communities. Conversely, not having a job can adversely affect spiritual and psychological well-being of individuals and families. Because unemployment is a spiritual problem, Christians in America need to understand and be aware of the monthly data on employment. Each month we highlight the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b0291b;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">latest numbers<\/a>\u00a0we need to know (see also:\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b0291b;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.acton.org\/archives\/69487-christians-know-unemployment.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">What Christians Should Know About Unemployment<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Positive news is marked with the plus sign (+) while negative employment data is marked with a minus sign (-). No significant change is marked by (NC).<br>\n<span id=\"more-78883\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unemployment rate (NC)<\/strong>: 5.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Total number unemployed (NC)<\/strong>: stayed at\u00a08.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employment-population ratio (NC)<\/strong>: 59.4 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Change by worker groups<\/strong>: adult men (NC), adult women (NC), teenagers (NC), blacks (NC), whites (NC), Asians (NC), and Hispanics (NC).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long-term unemployed (NC)<\/strong>: unchanged at 2.5 million and accounted for 28.6 percent of the unemployed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Civilian labor force participation rate (NC)<\/strong>: 62.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Persons employed part time for economic reasons (NC)<\/strong>: 6.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discouraged workers (+)<\/strong>: decreased\u00a0from 756,000 to\u00a0563,000.<\/p>\n<p>Glossary:<\/p>\n<p><em>Unemployment<\/em>: According to the federal government, to be unemployed a person must (a) be jobless, (b) looking for a job, and (c) available for work. People are considered employed if they have a job (whether temporary, part-time, etc.). People who are neither employed nor unemployed are considered to be not in the labor force.<\/p>\n<p><em>Unemployment rate<\/em>: Calculated by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all individuals currently in the labor force.<\/p>\n<p><em>Total number unemployed<\/em>: number of people unemployed in America in the previous month.<\/p>\n<p><em>Employment-population ratio<\/em>: measures the proportion of the country\u2019s working-age population (ages 16 to 64) that is employed. This number includes people that have stopped looking for work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Change by worker groups<\/em>: whether the number of unemployed in that group increased or decreased.<\/p>\n<p><em>Long-term unemployed<\/em>: People who have been unemployed for 12 months or longer.<\/p>\n<p><em>Civilian labor force participation rate<\/em>: share of the population 16 years and older working or seeking work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Persons employed part time for economic reasons<\/em>: individuals who would have preferred full-time employment but were working part time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job.<\/p>\n<p><em>Discouraged workers<\/em>: unemployed individuals who have stopped looking for work for one of four reasons:<\/p>\n<p>1. They believe no job is available to them in their line of work or area.<br>\n2. They had previously been unable to find work.<br>\n3. They lack the necessary schooling, training, skills, or experience.<br>\n4.
