By that I don\u2019t mean a group of cloistered church geeks who can\u2019t wait to tell you how bad your local congregation, priest, bishop, spouse, or jurisdiction is. For whatever it\u2019s worth, that \u201cvocation\u201d is already filled.<\/p>\n

Rather, what\u2019s needed are more places of prayer \u2014 first and foremost for Monastics who are praying for their own salvation and the world; a place where visitors are welcomed, as long as they don\u2019t interfere with the God-pleasing purpose of the monastery: Prayer & the Work of Salvation.<\/p>\n

Another American Orthodox need?<\/p>\n

GODLY GODPARENTS.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A priest once told me of a baptism where when the Godmother-to-be arrived he asked, \u201cWhat church do you go to?\u201d She replied, \u201cThis one.\u201d Having served there for 8 years and never having met her, he asked: \u201cWhen was the last time you went to Confession?\u201d She said, \u201cI\u2019ve never been to Confession.\u201d \u201cWell, my dear, you will today,\u201d he said (as he led her toward the icon).<\/p>\n

Too often\u2019s the case where the Sponsors for Baptism\/Chrismation are extended family members or close friends who may not be close to the Church Family. Asking them to fill this role is seen as an honour \u2026 That is until those being \u201chonoured\u201d need help crossing themselves or saying the Creed.<\/p>\n

True, if it\u2019s all a \u201cfamily thing\u201d the child may never stray. Yet, he or she may never grow in the Faith either. Then there are those who end up wandering away from the Church because they never learned anything and found more \u201cfulfilment\u201d in a mega-setting or with a rock band disguised as religion.<\/p>\n

Besides, Godly Godparents are needed to help raise up God-pleasing Monastics (not to mention priests, bishops, spouses, and future Godparents). <\/p>\n
