After each verse everyone responds, \u201cHave mercy on me, O God,\u201d and bows to touch the ground. It\u2019s serious, and timeless, and piercingly beautiful, and kindles humility and a yearning to be healed from all the poison within. In every way it contrasts with the image Christians (often deservedly) have in today\u2019s culture. I wanted to make it available to more people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Great Canon is part of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, but really, it\u2019s part of *every* Christian\u2019s tradition; we all go back to first century Jerusalem. The Canon makes more sense when you experience it in context, as part of the continuous flow of Orthodox prayer, liturgy, fasting, and sacraments. But I wanted to offer this introductory taste in hopes that it will leave some readers hungry for more. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/masthead\/masthead-lopez.asp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kathryn Jean Lopez<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">National Review<\/a> asks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frederica.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Frederica Mathewes-Green<\/a> questions about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1557254699\/ref=ase_holycrossanti-20\/103-9466022-6459807?s=books&amp;v=glance&amp;n=283155&amp;tagActionCode=holycrossanti-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">her new book<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>1.
