\u201cWednesday,\u201d I replied, and then hurriedly got off the phone. I called Mike, my boyfriend, in tears, complaining about how inconsiderate people are, how no one thinks before they speak. The truth was, until I heard the word \u201cabortion,\u201d it hadn\u2019t occurred to me that I was actually having one.<\/p>\n

Later, one of my teammates suggested that I tell others I had a miscarriage.
\u201cYou never know how people will react,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

My mother, too, was a proponent of the miscarriage story. She told two of my brothers the truth; she told the third that I\u2019d suddenly lost the baby. That brother\u2019s wife was a Catholic, and my mother was taking no chances.
\u201cPeople are funny,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
