A few reminiscences from the past week \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Christmas favorites blaring from AOL Radio on the Computer in the living room \u2026 10 year old singing, 2 year old hopping & dancing (in that hop-dance combination that only two year olds can) \u2026 6 year old boy doing something akin to break dancing and convulsing while belly flopping on the recliner.<\/p>\n

C<\/span>h<\/span>r<\/span>i<\/span>s<\/span>t<\/span>mas.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Asked a coworker at the recovery center to portray St Nicholas at our church on Sunday, the eve of St Nicholas Day. We\u2019ve always had presents available for the kids, but never a visit from \u201cthe Saint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zeek\u2019s not a churchgoer. He grew up Roman Catholic and used to serve in the altar \u2026 till one day he tripped on his robes and fell. And then there was the time he was supposed to pour water over the priest\u2019s fingers and he, well, used the wine. He\u2019s always very animated when he tells that story \u2026 about getting fired as an altar boy. I\u2019ve heard it at least five times.<\/p>\n

He was a portrait of humility on Sunday as he handed out presents, in costume, to our gathered young folks. They were in awe. Even the adults were \u2026 different. It was a touching scene. He later said it made his day. Others at work have said that he can\u2019t stop talking about it.<\/p>\n

Christm<\/span>a<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Listening to the \u201cJohn Boy & Billy Christmas Album\u201d CD \u2026 at least one selection from Lipless \u2026 \u201cAll I Want For Christmas is my Lips to Touch.\u201d My son can\u2019t remember half the things we tell him. He remembered that though. He\u2019s also been singing \u201cJingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg!\u201d \u2014 much to his parents\u2019 chagrin \u2014 for months now.<\/p>\n

Christmas.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

As we\u2019re leaving church the 10 year old asks, \u201cDad, who was that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guy you had playing St Nicholas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess it was St Nicholas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDad! Come on. Who was it? Mom said she didn\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know, Mary Catherine, I just assumed it was St Nicholas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDad!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo \u2026 it couldn\u2019t have been St Nicholas,\u201d the six year old interjects, \u201cbecause St Nicholas has two pieces of hair on the side and one on top. Right, Daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n

[He\u2019s referring to the Saint\u2019s balding pate as portrayed in some icons.]<\/p>\n

\u201cWell \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Christmas.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

By the time we got home, it\u2019s only a five minute drive, Basil had convinced himself that it really was<\/strong><\/em> St Nicholas. He said that he was watching him leave the church and then he just vanished into thin air \u2026 and went back to heaven. [My wife\u2019s version is that while Basil was watching him leave the church parking lot, she closed the door cutting off his view.]<\/p>\n

Whatever. <\/p>\n

Zeek loved that story.<\/p>\n
