Wanting to see if he would lose his temper they said to him, \u201cAren\u2019t you that Agathon who is said to be a fornicator and a proud man?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it is very true,\u201d he answered.<\/p>\n

They resumed, \u201cAren\u2019t you that Agathon who is always talking nonsense?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n

Again they said, \u201cAren\u2019t you Agathon the heretic?\u201d<\/p>\n

But at that he replied, \u201cI am not a heretic.\u201d<\/p>\n

So they asked him, \u201cTell us why you accepted everything we cast at you, but repudiated this last insult?\u201d<\/p>\n

He replied, \u201cThe first accusations I take to myself, for that is good for my soul. But heresy is separation from God. Now I have no wish to be separated from God.\u201d<\/p>\n

At this saying they were astonished at his discernment and returned edified.<\/p>\n
