Myths, legends and folktales are shapeshifters. They are fluid, mutable; they change with every retelling. That\u2019s the key to their continued existence: Adaptation according to the times and to the environment\u00a0in which they are told \u2013 and the individual thoughts and feelings of the storyteller.<\/p>\n

We tend to think of this process as a slow transition, but as my sister and I discovered recently, new meanings and new wisdom can be found in a single re-telling. To demonstrate this, I\u2019d like to present this adaptation of the beloved Aesop\u2019s fable, \u201cThe North Wind and The Sun<\/a>,\u201d by my four year old nephew Isaac. Seeing as today, May 5th, is Kodomo no Hi (Children\u2019s Day)<\/a> in Japan, it seems only appropriate!<\/p>\n

My sister was taking Isaac home from pre-school, and he told her that today, they had heard the story of \u201cThe Wind\u00a0and The Sun.\u201d My sister\u00a0wanted to check that he\u2019d understood the meaning of the story, and explained the moral was that the Wind couldn\u2019t get the coat off the traveller even though he was strong, but the Sun could because he was more gentle. As Wikipedia puts it, \u201cthe superiority of persuasion over force.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Isaac thought about this, and then said, \u201cNow I\u2019m going to tell a story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce upon a time, the Sun and the Wind saw\u00a0a\u00a0man wearing a big coat.
\n\u2018Let\u2019s see who can\u00a0make him take his coat off!\u2019 said the Sun.
\n\u2018OK!\u2019 said the Wind. \u2018That sounds fun!\u2019
\nSo\u00a0the Sun shone and shone, and the man got very warm. \u2018Phew, I\u2019m so hot!\u2019 said\u00a0the man and he unbuttoned his coat.
\nAnd then the Wind blew and blew as hard as he could\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and he blew so hard that he blew the man\u2019s\u00a0coat right\u00a0off!
