This morning a story about a war of words between Jezebel and The Daily Show<\/a> caught my eye in between Warren Buffett acting cute and Lindsay Lohan going to jail. It seemed to suggest The Daily Show was sexist, and as a fan I wanted to get to the bottom of it. So I read all the sides and as a feminist I\u2019m really peeved at Jezebel.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the scoop: Jezebel ran a story interviewing women who lost their jobs at The Daily Show and who couldn\u2019t get hired at The Daily Show about how the show is run by sexist pigs<\/a>. Let\u2019s ignore the fact that these women are obviously bitter at the show and didn\u2019t fit the show\u2019s culture for a moment. If you are being told The Daily Show is sexist what does that bring to mind? Less than 10% of the staff being female? Wide-spread sexual harassment? Lawsuits being filed left and right by former female employees? That would be a good story right? Full of righteous indignation?<\/p>\n

Well, that\u2019s not the story though. Actually 40% of The Daily Show staff are female. True, there weren\u2019t any female writers on staff until recently, but then apparently there aren\u2019t any men in the accounting dept either. Guess girls don\u2019t find math all that hard after all, huh? Looks like the only hint of a scandal is Craig Kilborn cracking an off-color joke about a female co-worker, after which she resigned.<\/p>\n

Oh, but what about the emphasis on looks? It\u2019s TELEVISION. Quite frankly the men on The Daily Show are very groomed, well-coiffed and well-heeled. Kevin Smith, funny as he may be, couldn\u2019t get a correspondent gig on The Daily Show. He doesn\u2019t fit the look. Don\u2019t want to be judged on your looks? Maybe acting isn\u2019t for you.<\/p>\n

What really got me though, was that the women they interviewed seemed to think that The Daily Show should have a nurturing environment in which they can be emotional and vulnerable. That this company should conform to their needs. That is feminist BS of the first order and my biggest beef with the women\u2019s movement.<\/p>\n

At 23, I was the project estimator\/manager for a highway construction company. I was good at it. There is nothing more masculine than construction, so how did I manage? I certainly didn\u2019t expect to be emotionally nurtured. I did my job. I learned the culture, I found the gender biases and I found how I could best work within that framework. I embraced the yang elements of the industry and eventually earned the respect of my colleagues and associates. When I did encounter actual sexism I either exploited it or ignored it.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t really have an issue with the men in my industry. We respected each other for our skills and reliability. I did have issues with some of the women in my industry. They tended to be emotional and unprofessional. They were rarely direct or reliable in an industry that required you to be both, and they felt they were slighted for their gender, rather than for their lack of necessary qualities. It was irritating to women like me, and there were a few of us, who had to not only push past initial gender biases to succeed, but to also have our female colleagues try to drag us down.<\/p>\n

Which is why I\u2019m glad the women of The Daily Show spoke up. In an informative and funny open letter they explain just how wrong Jezebel got the show\u2019s culture<\/a>. They proved that there was room at The Daily Show for funny, smart women of different ages, shapes, sizes, and color. Oh and casual dress code doesn\u2019t tend to suggest the show is overly concerned with staffers being \u201cpretty enough\u201d.<\/p>\n

Work is work. It\u2019s about performance. If you need nurturing consider counseling, massage therapy, or teaching yoga as a career path. Don\u2019t go into something as ruthless as television, construction or the military and complain that it\u2019s an intense high-pressure environment that doesn\u2019t support your emotional needs. You will have to find those things outside of your job in those fields, just like you\u2019ll have to find competitive, high-energy outlets outside of more yin careers. It\u2019s up to you to create the balance in your life, not your employer or co-workers.<\/p>\n

Looking at this from a Pagan perspective, how many Goddesses would put up with whining that your job isn\u2019t nurturing enough? Inanna has literally been to hell and back. Freya is ruthless when in pursuit of her goals and half the slain warriors hang out in her hall. The Morr\u00edgan delights in the horrors of battle. Diana Nemorensis\u2019 priest was a runaway slave who only reigned until some other runaway slave defeated him in battle and took his place.<\/p>\n

We need to stop dividing traits between the sexes. Saying that a fast-paced, high-pressure environment like The Daily Show is not nurturing enough for women and therefore sexist, not only disrespects the women working there by implying they aren\u2019t feminine, but disrespects nurturing men by implying they are unnatural.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
