The English language is a tough one to master even for those of us who have been using it our whole life. For some this is merely frustrating. For others her idiosyncrasies\u00a0make English fascinating and\u00a0<em>multifarious<\/em>\u00a0(adj. \u2013 \u2018to having many parts; diverse and varied\u2019). And yet the typical person in our culture uses only a\u00a0<em>scintilla<\/em>\u00a0(n. \u2013\u00a0a small fraction; a minute particle or trace) of this\u00a0<em>resplendent<\/em>\u00a0(adj. \u2013 gleaming, splendid, shining), language. We might try and church it up every now and then, trying to find a synonym at thesaurus.com, but wouldn\u2019t it be fun to replace our\u00a0<em>palaver<\/em>\u00a0(n. \u2013 empty talk, babble, chatter), with a more\u00a0<em>erudite<\/em>\u00a0(adj. \u2013 characterized by great knowledge, learned or scholarly), vocabulary?<\/p>\n<p>So here are ten great words you should know and use. Chances are you have some of them in your regular rotation, but there might be something here you can use.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Heuristic<\/span> \u2013 using experience to learn and improve. (I watch <em>The Daily Show<\/em> for heuristic reasons, as well as entertainment.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Metonymy<\/span> \u2013 using one name in order to refer to something else that is related. (\u201cThe White House\u201d is a convenient metonymy which keeps reporters from having to say \u201cPresident Obama, his aids, and advisers.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bunkum<\/span> \u2013 foolish or untrue words or ideas. (The Tea Party bunkum has not caught on with all Republicans.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Largesse<\/span> \u2013 a generous gift. (Thanks boss. Because of this largesse, I can quit this job and go back to college.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Blatherskite<\/span> \u2013 nonsense or blather. (The Tea Party blatherskite has not caught on with all Republicans.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Factotum<\/span> \u2013 a person having many diverse responsibilities; servant. (Our neighborhood factotum moved away, so I had to call a plumber.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sangfroid<\/span> \u2013 imperturbability, self-possession under strain. (Showing great sangfroid and the touch of a master tactician, my son just sank my battleship.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meretricious<\/span> \u2013 of or relating to prostitution; tawdry; falsely attractive. (The meretricious campaign promises were not enough to sway the vote.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Etiolate<\/span> \u2013 to make pale or feeble; deprive of vigor. (My poor etiolated lawn needs some water.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Orgulous<\/span> \u2013 proud or haughty.
