Colbert, who maintains a friendship with Cardinal Timothy Dolan, brought his usual irreverent humor for the crowd, including a few zingers for the Pope. Here\u2019s hoping that one difference between Pope Francis and his predecessor is a sense of humor. Something tells me that Pope Francis would have like Colbert\u2019s shtick, assuming the bit translates well into Spanish. If you want to listen to the whole speech you can find it\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.colbertnewshub.com\/2013\/10\/18\/stephen-colberts-keynote-speech-68th-annual-alfred-e-smith-memorial\/#more-27510\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of the highlights from <a href=\"http:\/\/religion.blogs.cnn.com\/2013\/10\/18\/stephen-colbert-roasts-the-pope\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Blake\u2019s coverage<\/a> at CNN:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs an observant Catholic, I believe the Pope is infallible,\u201d said Colbert, a Communion-class teacher at a parish in New Jersey. \u201cBut he\u2019s also wrong about a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colbert \u2026 poked fun at the new Pope\u2019s humble lifestyle, saying that if the pontiff were in charge of the white-tie charity event \u2026 \u201cHis Humbleness would be out washing the feet of the coat-check guy or something,\u201d Colbert quipped.\u00a0\u201cWe get it, you\u2019re modest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s not just his humble lifestyle. He\u2019s off message. He says Catholics need to stop obsessing about homosexuality, contraception and abortion. For Pete\u2019s sake, we need something to obsess about now that `Breaking Bad\u2019 is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing Catholic is like being in the Admiral\u2019s Club of Christianity: Membership has its privileges,\u201d Colbert joked. \u201cBut if even atheists can be redeemed, what\u2019s next,\u00a0<em>Lutherans<\/em>? \u00a0It\u2019s madness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dolan, the portly archbishop of New York and a rising star in the Catholic Church, came\u00a0<em>this close<\/em>\u00a0to being elected pope himself earlier this year, Colbert said. \u201cBut he blew it in the swimsuit competition. I would have gone with the one-piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday night, Dolan, who was dressed in a cardinal\u2019s traditional small black cape with red trimming, looked like \u201ca matador who\u2019s really let himself go,\u201d Colbert joked. \u201cDid you not see the invite? It said white-tie, not \u2018flamboyant Zorro.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are a few other lines from the talk from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colbertnewshub.com\/2013\/10\/18\/stephen-colberts-keynote-speech-68th-annual-alfred-e-smith-memorial\/#more-27510\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Colbert\u2019s news hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am proud to be America\u2019s most famous Catholic,\u201d Colbert declared, turning to Dolan, who was sitting next to him on a dais that included Gov. Andrew Cuomo, CBS anchor Scott Pelley and others. \u201cAnd I\u2019m sure the cardinal is thinking, \u2018Stephen, pride is a sin.\u2019 Well, cardinal, so is envy, so we\u2019re even.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 1,000 people paid $1,500 apiece to attend the dinner, which Colbert referred to as \u201cCatholic Thanksgiving\u201d because it falls on the third Thursday of every October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like we all showed up at the same Halloween party dressed as the Monopoly guy,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you know that\u2019s kind of fitting because the Wall Street guys apparently have a get-out-of-jail free card.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen Colbert, who (when in character) calls himself America\u2019s most famous Catholic, spoke at the Al Smith Dinner last month.
