So many hours, so much of my heart and soul were invested in these songs, and it all feels so fleeting now. About a decade, somewhere upwards of a thousand shows, and I still can’t remember the lyrics to my own tunes.

I can’t always say this, but I’m really glad that I wrote Always the Same. It seems as though this song came from a genuine place for me, and I love the lyrics. When we were in the studio Paul (our producer, Paul Ebersold), kept trying to get me to speed up the tempo. We’d bump it up 2-3 beats per minute, play it once, bitch and moan, and lower the beats per minute back down. We’d continue rehearsing for awhile, then ask Paul what he thought. “Faster,” he would say. We’d bump it up 2-3 bpm, play the song, bitch and moan, and repeat the process… took nearly all morning. Finally I realized that this song beats to the tempo of my life. …nothing I could do about that, so this is where we ended up. To this day I don’t think I’ve ever rushed this song, (which is really saying something for me).
