She loved them! She showed them to me and her dad and her sisters. She rubbed them along her cheek and exclaimed about how beautiful and soft they were! She was overjoyed when I told her that she could pick any dandelions she wanted, whenever she saw them.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the sweet older lady from down the street dropped by to chat. When my daughter pulled the beloved crushed dandelions out of her pocket to show off her treasures, \u201cAmma\u201d told her that those flowers are yucky weeds. Ms Action\u2019s face changed, she looked at the flowers in her hand puzzled. <\/p>\n<p>I interjected, hoping to change the pattern of conversation \u201cThey are pretty though, and you can pick them whenever you want to!\u201d Ms Action looked hopeful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d Said \u201cAmma\u201d. \u201cYou can come over and pick all the ones in my yard and throw them in the garbage!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The conversation changed after that, but the damage was done. My 4 year old held the flowers for a few more moments, but the magic was gone. She dropped them on the ground reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">*************************<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">How many times do we destroy joy?<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYour efforts in cleaning this room are pathetic because you didn\u2019t vacuum in the corners.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><br><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYou are not beautiful because you have love handles and acne.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><br><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cThat career choice is stupid because there are so many other \u201cmore meaningful\u201d things you could do.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><br><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYour parenting efforts are pointless because you\u2026 (don\u2019t breastfeed, don\u2019t stay home full time, don\u2019t eat organic, don\u2019t homeschool\u2026 etc.)\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><br><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYou\u2019re a terrible provider because you can\u2019t afford a house.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><\/em><br>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">What some people see as beautiful, other people see as weeds. But even dandelions are also flowers. Does something or someone really have to be \u201cperfect\u201d in order to be beautiful, or even acceptable? What if we really were good enough? Supposed flaws and all.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">*************************<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Or what\u00a0if we look at it another way? <\/span>This kind of thought pattern is very alive in religious circles as well, and the older lady friend of mine was technically correct. <em>Dandelions are weeds.<\/em> But does that mean that no one can appreciate their beauty? Is there no positive side to dandelions? Nothing to be redeemed or appreciated? <\/p>\n<p>When faced with what we see as spiritual weeds in someone\u2019s life, is our only option to intuit eternal fires that \u201cburn away the chaff\u201d? Is it our religious God-given \u201cduty\u201d to (at the very least) \u201cencourage\u201d them to throw it in the garbage?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYour love for that person is evil and wrong because you are sleeping with them.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><br><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYour marriage is pointless if you are having those issues.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><br><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYour talents and abilities are worthless because they don\u2019t fit what a \u201cGodly\u201d man\/woman is supposed to look like.<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em><br><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cYour faith is ineffectual because you don\u2019t believe the \u201cright\u201d things, or practice them the \u201cright\u201d way.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">Is there truly nothing redeemable about these \u201cweeds\u201d? No beauty? Nothing to be appreciated? <\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-JgSuMqeFusg\/TbsVVlZDouI\/AAAAAAAAAv0\/JWa-qTvHwi4\/s1600\/painting1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400px\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-JgSuMqeFusg\/TbsVVlZDouI\/AAAAAAAAAv0\/JWa-qTvHwi4\/s400\/painting1.jpg\" width=\"315px\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">I think this is the point<\/span> of the parable of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2018:9-14&amp;version=NASB\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pharisee and the Publican<\/a>. The Pharisee looks around his garden and thanks God that his crop is looking great. He compares his garden to his neighbour\u2019s and says to himself <em>\u201cI\u2019m so glad that I am a better gardener than that guy. My soil is rich, not like his hard clay. My plants are productive and numerous, nothing like those measly excuses for plants. My plot never looks overgrown like his does. I\u2019m so glad I am a diligent hardworking gardener.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And he has no idea that his neighbour the Publican hardly had enough money for seeds, much less fertilizer. He doesn\u2019t know that his neighbour has health challenges and chronic pain that have kept him from weeding consistently. In contrast, the Publican looks around his garden, (never bothering to compare to anyone else\u2019s) is thankful for what he has, and has hopes for improvement. He thanks God, and asks for mercy in the face of the unknown.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">Is it possible to truly love someone even when they have what you perceive to be \u201cweeds\u201d in their life? Can that person be embraced and accepted, weeds and all?
