{"id":147,"date":"2010-11-18T06:00:57","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T10:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/philosophicalfragments\/?p=147"},"modified":"2010-11-18T06:00:57","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T10:00:57","slug":"worth-reading-today-november-16-what-the-midterms-meant-how-bad-data-spreads-and-vernon-grounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/philosophicalfragments\/2010\/11\/18\/worth-reading-today-november-16-what-the-midterms-meant-how-bad-data-spreads-and-vernon-grounds\/","title":{"rendered":"Worth Reading Today &#8211; November 16 &#8211; What the Midterms Meant, How Bad Data Spreads, and Vernon Grounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>A few items worth reading today:<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Steven Malanga is an excellent writer for the Manhattan Institute\u2019s <em>City Journal<\/em>. \u00a0He\u2019s also an editor for RealClearMarkets, where he reports on the extensive amount of research he\u2019s done into municipal debt. \u00a0We speak a great deal of federal debt and state debt, but Malanga tells us that the problem runs deeper. \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearmarkets.com\/articles\/2010\/11\/17\/us_states_face_a_deep_fiscal_crisis_98760.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cities Face a Deepening Fiscal Crisis<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0The American Enterprise Institute has a detailed break-down of the midterm election exit polls and what they tell us. \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.american.com\/archive\/2010\/november\/what-the-voters-actually-said-on-election-day\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">What the Voters Actually Said on Election Day<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0Thomas Friedman describes the history of bad data \u2013 in this case the claim that Obama\u2019s trip to India was costing $200M daily. \u00a0The claim originated with an anonymous Indian official, and was quickly circulated into the conservative media sphere. \u00a0It was apparently false, and by a wide margin. \u00a0Bad data is bad data, whether it\u2019s used in support of conservative or liberal causes. \u00a0Our commitment to the truth requires that we be careful with our claims, and certify their accuracy. \u00a0Friedman is selective in his outrage, to be sure. \u00a0If you doubt that the same kind of misinformation is circulated through the liberal echo chamber, you\u2019re fooling yourself. \u00a0But the point is nonetheless valid. \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/17\/opinion\/17friedman.html?adxnnl=1&amp;src=ISMR_AP_LO_MST_FB&amp;adxnnlx=1290011019-PknyhuDxgL+Z0LwhNYRJpA\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Too Good to Check<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4. \u00a0<em>Christianity Today\u2019s <\/em>portrait of Vernon Grounds, who passed away after seven decades of involvement in church issues, puts the lie (although this point is not really fleshed out) to the claim that evangelicals have only recently discovered \u201csocial justice\u201d issues. \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2010\/november\/24.50.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Man for All Evangelicals<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few items worth reading today: 1. \u00a0Steven Malanga is an excellent writer for the Manhattan Institute\u2019s City Journal. \u00a0He\u2019s also an editor for RealClearMarkets, where he reports on the extensive amount of research he\u2019s done into municipal debt. \u00a0We speak a great deal of federal debt and state debt, but Malanga tells us that [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":30,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-147","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
