{"id":164,"date":"2010-12-06T23:50:03","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T03:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/philosophicalfragments\/?p=164"},"modified":"2010-12-06T23:50:03","modified_gmt":"2010-12-07T03:50:03","slug":"palinoia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/philosophicalfragments\/2010\/12\/06\/palinoia\/","title":{"rendered":"Palinoia"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>This morning my new column was published, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/Resources\/Additional-Resources\/Palin-Enragement-Syndrome.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Palin Enragement Syndrome<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 The response to Palin, when she first came to the attention of the public, was so overwhelming and so extraordinarily negative that it requires explanation, and has to be explained by more than mere political opposition.\u00a0 I begin the column thus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><\/em><em>The fight over Sarah Palin is about a lot more than  Sarah Palin. It\u2019s about what America means. It\u2019s about what things are  truly good and trustworthy. It\u2019s about the worldview and the values that  will guide our government and society.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The gist is this.\u00a0 The Left\u2019s loathing and the Right\u2019s love for Palin (or at least the populist Right) \u2014 at least in large part \u2014 does not have to do with her past or her policies, but with all that she personifies.\u00a0 She personifies a culture that the Right sees as truly, classically, and morally American \u2014 and that the Left sees as unsophisticated, religiously fanatical, and bigoted.\u00a0 She personifies the culture that the populist Right wants to revive, and that the elitist Left wants to leave behind.<\/p>\n<p>Does Sarah Palin represent what America should be?\u00a0 What values should guide us?\u00a0 Or does she represent the old America, unevolved and backward?\u00a0 Some on the Left (and not on the Left) despise Palin for good reasons.\u00a0 But many despise her for what she represents, and because they despise the people who support her.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/Resources\/Additional-Resources\/Palin-Enragement-Syndrome.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Read the rest of the column for more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/Resources\/Additional-Resources\/Defending-Sarah-Palin.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">David French argues<\/a>, it\u2019s important to stand against the extreme slander that Palin has suffered.\u00a0 But this does not mean that we should support Palin for President.\u00a0 It seems as though the Right is making this distinction.\u00a0 Many conservatives bristle at all the bile poured out on Palin.\u00a0 But they are hesitant to support her for President.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s right.\u00a0 She is still young, and in my opinion she needs more experience in national politics before she\u2019ll be ready for such a role.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.obamaantichrist.org\/images\/sarah-palin-antichrist.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obamaantichrist.org\/images\/sarah-palin-antichrist.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"347\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Right now, Palin is oscillating between political and media roles.\u00a0 Is she the white conservative Oprah?\u00a0 Or is she the anti-Obama?\u00a0 It seems to me that if she were absolutely convinced that she wanted to run for President, she would be edging toward the Obama side, and taking fewer popular media roles.\u00a0 So I\u2019m hoping that she will not run.\u00a0 One would like to think that a person like Palin would consider not only whether she could win, but whether she is truly ready to be a successful President.\u00a0 (One wonders whether Obama ever wondered this, or was capable of doubting his own readiness and capability.)\u00a0 If she ran, she could wreak a lot of havoc.\u00a0 She would gain a great deal of respect in my mind if she decided not to run, and instead to use her influence to support a more experienced and immaculately qualified conservative candidate.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning my new column was published, \u201cPalin Enragement Syndrome.\u201d\u00a0 The response to Palin, when she first came to the attention of the public, was so overwhelming and so extraordinarily negative that it requires explanation, and has to be explained by more than mere political opposition.\u00a0 I begin the column thus: The fight over Sarah [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":30,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[43],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-164","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sarah-palin"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
