{"id":634,"date":"2011-07-18T11:32:01","date_gmt":"2011-07-18T15:32:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/philosophicalfragments\/?p=634"},"modified":"2011-07-18T11:32:01","modified_gmt":"2011-07-18T15:32:01","slug":"are-conservative-states-better-weathering-the-storm-the-morning-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/philosophicalfragments\/2011\/07\/18\/are-conservative-states-better-weathering-the-storm-the-morning-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Conservative States Better Weathering the Storm?: The Morning Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><em>Note: I am traveling most of this week, but will do my best to maintain the blog schedule.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Thanks, Moody\u2019s. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/43790768\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">That\u2019s a great idea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0Is it a coincidence that the states whose economies and whose state budgets are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2011\/jul\/17\/many-states-celebrate-surpluses-as-congress-strugg\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">faring best<\/a> have been under the leadership of conservatives? \u00a0As <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.the-american-interest.com\/wrm\/2011\/07\/12\/obamageddon-coming-to-a-city-near-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Walter Russell Mead<\/a> noted in a typically incisive column recently:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The states where unemployment rates for African Americans are relatively low are states where not many African Americans live: Alaska (5.4 percent Black unemployment), Wyoming (6.2 percent), Idaho (8.0 percent), Hawaii (9.6 percent) and (at 10.3 percent) New Hampshire.\u00a0 Except for Hawaii all are generally conservative, low-tax states.\u00a0 The states with the highest unemployment rates for African Americans are staunchly blue: Wisconsin (25 percent), Michigan (23.9 percent), Minnesota (22 percent), Maine (21.4 percent) and Washington (21.4 percent).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>3. \u00a0Casey Anthony emerges from prison, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/28581441\/detail.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">vanishes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Pews<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/religion\/2011-07-17-gay-marry-clergy-churches_n.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">surprisingly decent article<\/a> from USA Today on the debate amongst churches and clergy over gay ordination.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/philcooke.com\/why-do-christian-denominations-have-such-difficulty-sharing-a-common-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Why Do Christian Denominations Have Such Difficulty Sharing a Common Story?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0R. C. Sproul: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ligonier.org\/blog\/does-god-forgive-forget\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Does God Forgive and Forget?<\/a>\u201d \u00a0Sproul states the question: \u201cAre my sins that I genuinely repent of remembered by God after my death or are they removed\u00a0forever?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BONUS: I recently interviewed Josh McDowell about his forthcoming book on sex. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/apologist-josh-mcdowell-internet-the-greatest-threat-to-christians-52382\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christian Post<\/a> has more.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note: I am traveling most of this week, but will do my best to maintain the blog schedule.
