After all, \u201cRoses are red, violets are blue; they both grow better with more CO2.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cRumors\u201d of foreclosures, high unemployment, homelessness, and general misery during the Great Depression are just socialist propaganda.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Unions just want to destroy the accomplishments of \u201chardworking Americans.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Mormons, Unitarians, and Catholics = bad.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>And then there\u2019s the history of racial\/ethnic relations: \u201cGod used the \u2018Trail of Tears\u2019 to bring many Indians to Christ\u201d and \u201c<strong>Through the Negro spiritual, slaves developed patience to wait on the Lord and discovered that the truest freedom is freedom from the bondage of sin<\/strong>.\u201d No, seriously \u2014 I didn\u2019t make those up.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><em><!--more--><\/em><\/div>\n<p>The books were published by Bob Jones and A Beka, two giants of the Christian homeschooling circuit. My mother chose the less regimented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonlight.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sonlight Curriculum<\/a> for me, to which I owe a relative absence of childhood brainwashing. Bob Jones and A Beka are <a href=\"http:\/\/madmikesamerica.com\/2012\/06\/the-indoctrination-of-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">indoctrination mills<\/a>; nothing more, nothing less. What\u2019s worse is that the Christian homeschooling movement allows them to outsource the indoctrination to parents, making it that much harder to figure out whether children are being educated or force-fed party lines from the Religious Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evangelical women should take heed<\/strong>: that last, incredibly offensive passage\u00a0<em>downplaying the evil of slavery<\/em>\u00a0sounds just like the message the Christian Patriarchy Movement pushes on its wives and daughters: Smile (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/nolongerquivering\/2011\/11\/but-they-look-so-happy\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">happiness<\/a> is the <a href=\"http:\/\/dulcefamily.blogspot.com\/2012\/06\/happiness-isnt-only-acceptable-emotion.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">only<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/nolongerquivering\/2012\/02\/carefully-scripted-lives-the-real-reality-of-the-duggar-family-blessings\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">acceptable<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/hippiehousewife.blogspot.com\/2012\/06\/when-theres-pain-in-blessing.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">emotion<\/a>!), praise the Lord, practice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.altaredview.com\/2009\/05\/joy-jesus-then-others-then-yourself.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">J.O.Y.<\/a>, and remember that \u201cworldly\u201d women whose husbands don\u2019t boss them around aren\u2019t <em>nearly<\/em> as free as you are, because <em>you\u00a0<\/em>are\u00a0<em>free from <strong>sin<\/strong>!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Not to mention the incredible failures of political science:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cUnions have always been plagued by socialists and anarchists who use laborers to destroy the free-enterprise system that hard-working Americans have created.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are just a few reasons why this passage is not education:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cAlways\u201d is never appropriate in a historical discussion. You\u00a0<em>must<\/em> discuss the circumstances that gave rise to labor unions, what they were intended to do, who supported or opposed them and why,<em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>discuss concrete examples of changes labor unions made to the economy and work conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Failure to discuss the logic of socialism and anarchism. Why would anyone join a movement based on destroying something without having a better idea of how it could work?<\/li>\n<li>Opposing \u201claborers\u201d to \u201chard-working Americans,\u201d which is pretty much like opposing \u201cthe sun\u201d to \u201cthe star closest to Earth.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Failure to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of capitalism, which means the kids aren\u2019t even learning rational ways to defend it, just knee-jerk reactions to a perceived threat.<\/li>\n<li>Accusing unions (collective associations of laborers) of \u201cusing\u201d laborers like tools. Is it really exploitation when you use yourself?<\/li>\n<li>What exactly does \u201cfree enterprise\u201d mean and <em>how<\/em> do labor unions oppose it? People debate questions like this at the university level, so I\u2019m pretty sure you can\u2019t take for granted that a homeschooled kid already has a working definition.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sure, some of these problems\u00a0<em>could<\/em> be addressed elsewhere in the textbook, but given the tenor of that passage, I really frickin\u2019 doubt it.<\/p>\n<h2>See also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.11points.com\/Books\/11_Eye-Opening_Highlights_From_a_Creationist_Science_Textbook\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">11 Eye-Opening Highlights from a Creationist Science Textbook<\/a>:<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s a teaser from a Bob Jones textbook (Science 4 for Christian Schools):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phoenixandolivebranch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/grandcanyon.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1402\" src=\"https:\/\/phoenixandolivebranch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/grandcanyon.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They get points for trying to explain things using erosion. But let\u2019s stop and ponder something for a moment:\u00a0<em>where did all that water go?\u00a0<\/em>Rene Descartes had some theories a little while ago, but people called him an atheist.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, y\u2019all, here\u2019s a fun fact:<br>\nThe idea that geological stratification (particularly the sinking of fossils due to specific gravity into different layers of rock) resulted from Noah\u2019s Flood was <em><strong>shot down in the 1690s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>due to glaring logical inconsistencies. Among them was the fact that fossils were often heavier in the top layers than the bottom ones. Who did the downshooting? Good Christian Men who also liked to do experiments and think about things.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not opposed to belief in Creation \u2013 way back, before evolution got rolling. That version of Creationism at least makes sense to me. I <em>am\u00a0<\/em>opposed, however, to trying to revive the Flood to explain American geology.
