So far today, I\u2019ve managed to keep the red blush from crawling up my neck. It\u2019s only 3:17 p.m. The day is young.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, it only took me an hour to experience the day\u2019s humiliation. The first human being I spoke to was the tinny voice coming out of the Dunkin\u2019 Donuts speaker, asking to take my order.<\/p>\n

\u201cA medium coffee, two sugars, and a chocolate covered bagel,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cA chocolate covered bagel?\u201d Tinny Voice asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Chocolate covered bagel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you say chocolate covered BAGEL?\u201d she queried again.<\/p>\n

That was it. She couldn\u2019t hear me. I looked toward the pick-up window and nodded slightly, to show her I understood, then yelled, \u201cBAGEL!\u201d<\/p>\n

She tried again. \u201cBagel?\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a long pause. Obviously, we weren\u2019t communicating very well at all. She was staring at me, trying to turn on the darkened lightbulb over my head with her eyes.<\/p>\n

At last\u2026ignition: \u201cOh,\u201d I said sheepishly. \u201cI meant doughnut.\u201d<\/p>\n
