<\/iframe><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>In a nutshell, what the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">World Humanitarian Summit<\/a>\u00a0that convened in Istanbul, Turkey on May 23-24, advocates is this: Investing in people\u2014not in the ravages of war. Their global vision: Opening doors and borders\u2014not closing them.<\/h4>\n<p>Feasible? \u00a0Or just another well-intentioned UN PR exercise to justify its <em>raison d\u2019\u00eatre<\/em>? Let\u2019s hear from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Secretary General<\/a>, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, the instigator of the summit:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all here because global humanitarian action is unprecedentedly strained,\u201d Mr. Ban told thousands attending the opening ceremony, which featured performances and inspiring acts by renowned stars including <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Tu7bcT\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Forest Whitaker<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1YRbEKg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ashley Judd<\/a> and Malian singer,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/meetings-events\/watch\/inna-modja-opening-of-the-world-humanitarian-summit-23-24-may-2016-istanbul-turkey\/4907170678001\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Inna Modja<\/a>. The latter\u2019s poetical ballad with flanking visuals, the most heart-stirring appeal of all.<\/p>\n<p>There are millions worldwide struggling on a daily basis with poverty, displacement, disease, and all the concomitant fallout of war, fundamentalist terrorism, and the affects of global warming and tidal rises. This is not breaking news. But possibly for many it\u2019s no more that a sound byte among millions that simply gets lost in a maelstrom of information overload. Or, dare I say it, compassion fatigue?<\/p>\n<p>And that, however platitudinous it may sound, is sad and alarming<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Resolute Mr. Ban<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a 21st century United Nations gathering,\u201d Ban told the Summit, adding that its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consultations.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/bitcache\/e49881ca33e3740b5f37162857cedc92c7c1e354?vid=569103&disposition=inline&op=view\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Agenda for Humanity<\/a>, the document he recently oversaw to steer discussions and action, is based on three years of consultations with 23,000 people in more than 150 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Over its two day summit in the Turkish capital, the WHS brought together key investors who have demonstrated a will to address the global humanitarian crisis, including more than 65 Heads of State and Government as well as leaders from the public and private sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief underlined that the world is looking to them for commitments to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/learn\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">five core responsibilities<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/entries\/core-responsibility-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Prevent and end conflict<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/entries\/core-responsibility-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Respect rules of war<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/entries\/core-responsibility-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Leave no one behind<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/entries\/core-responsibility-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Working differently to end need<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.worldhumanitariansummit.org\/entries\/core-responsibility-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Invest in humanity<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe are here to shape a different future,\u201d Mr. Ban concluded. \u201cToday we declare: We are one humanity, with a shared responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Brighter Future?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=54011#.V0NOwJErLIV\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"> expressed hope <\/a>that the Summit would lead to \u201causpicious outcomes\u201d for <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1244\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/675\/2016\/05\/UN-Pic-Boy-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"UN Pic Boy\" width=\"359\" height=\"239\">millions of people struggling to sustain their lives against bleak odds. In his words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPain knows no colour, race, language or religion\u2026\u00a0We will never close our doors or our borders to people . We as leaders and responsible individuals of the international community can only succeed if we work under common principles and goals.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Disarming Words from Survivors . .\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/meetings-events\/watch\/victor-ochen-opening-of-the-world-humanitarian-summit-23-24-may-2016-istanbul-turkey\/4907142864001\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Victor Ochen<\/a>, a former child solider from northern Uganda, reflected on his inescapable violent childhood. At the age of 13, he\u2019s had enough and formed a peace group in his refugee camp to discourage youngsters from paramilitary enlistment. \u201cPeace comes from within,\u201d he said. \u201cBe human and act human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/meetings-events\/watch\/victoria-arnaiz-lanting-opening-of-the-world-humanitarian-summit-23-24-may-2016-istanbul-turkey\/4907172535001\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Victoria Arnaiz-Lanting<\/a> described her harrowing survival of Typhoon Haiyan which hit the Philippines in 2013. She lost many friends and colleagues in the storm, dead bodies littered the streets, and \u201ctrees and electric posts fell to the ground like match sticks.\u201d The thousands which the typhoon displaced were\u00a0driven by hunger and grief to loot whatever they could from supermarkets.<\/p>\n<p>Can you blame them?<\/p>\n<p>And yet, she expressed how uplifting it was to see how people rallied to rebuild their lives. According to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=54011#.V0NOwJErLIV\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">her testimony<\/a>, the Philippines Red Cross and victims themselves began treating the wounded and liaising with the Government and other humanitarian actors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article-thumbnails-stream\">\u00a0\u201cThis is humanity in action,\u201d she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=54011#.V0NOwJErLIV\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">told<\/a> the Summit, noting that disasters affected more than 200 million people a year and that preparedness needs to be a way of life. She encouraged every nation, regardless of size, to invest in local activism.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Agenda for Humanity<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>What prompted Mr. Ban Ki-Moon four years ago to plan this 2016 Summit was, \u201cconcern for rising humanitarian needs and declining political will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t it time to pause our consumer addictions, political posturing, and online gambling to take a serious look at what this important summit has to say to humanity as a whole? And, more importantly, to consider what possible ways we may, on a local and digital level, contribute to the healing, reconciliation, and flourishing of our one human community?<\/p>\n<p>The physical planet, no matter how much we contaminate and pollute it, knows how to cleanse and renew itself. And it will expedite this process accordingly. Yes, we need to be a vital part of this cleansing, but we must first start to pay closer attention to how we\u2014one species among millions\u2014are failing to feed, clothe, heal, educate, and provide shelter for the neediest in our midst.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/pitstopforthespirituallybamboozled\/2016\/01\/what-2000-of-the-worlds-most-powerful-people-did-at-davos.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">2,000 of the world\u2019s most powerful people <\/a>met in Davos, Switzerland to discuss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/pitstopforthespirituallybamboozled\/2016\/01\/what-2000-of-the-worlds-most-powerful-people-did-at-davos.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">innovative ways<\/a>\u00a0to put cutting-edge economics and computer technology at the service of the common good. Long term service to humanity, rather than short-term gain for billionaire entrepreneurs, was their common objective. And how commendable was that?<\/p>\n<p>So yes, Mr. Ban, your four year vision-in-the-making is a timely complement to the Davos Convention.
