{"id":350,"date":"2016-06-12T07:42:27","date_gmt":"2016-06-12T11:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/spiritualitychannelseries\/?p=350"},"modified":"2016-06-12T07:42:27","modified_gmt":"2016-06-12T11:42:27","slug":"nurturing-the-art-of-receiving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/pitstopforthespirituallybamboozled\/2016\/06\/nurturing-the-art-of-receiving.html","title":{"rendered":"Nurturing the Art of Receiving."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/spiritualitychannelseries\/files\/2016\/02\/peaceful-442070_640.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-937\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-937\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/spiritualitychannelseries\/files\/2016\/02\/peaceful-442070_640.jpg\" alt=\"peaceful-442070_640\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is it, I sometimes wonder, that we struggle with not only being grateful in life, but in simply <em>receiving<\/em> a word of praise, appreciation, or blessing from another?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, parents and others have advised me not to \u201clook a gift horse in the mouth.\u201d Referring to the age-old practice of determining a horse\u2019s age by the length of its teeth, what they were saying essentially was, don\u2019t be unappreciative for the gifts you receive in life. And more especially, don\u2019t underestimate the value of what you have received or examine its worth against your lofty expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/spiritualitychannelseries\/files\/2016\/02\/spider-web-534080_1280.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-351\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-351 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/spiritualitychannelseries\/files\/2016\/02\/spider-web-534080_1280-1024x769.jpg\" alt=\"spider-web-534080_1280\" width=\"285\" height=\"214\"><\/a>And yet, that\u2019s exactly what many of us do. We like to analyze, examine, and tinker with everything from our brains\u00a0to the plankton in the depths of the ocean. Natural curiosity is not an unhealthy or irrational behavior. But there are moments when simply being in the presence of another, or anything that evokes wonder within us, in a spirit of quiet receptivity is all that\u2019s necessary.<\/p>\n<p>And, all that\u2019s necessary when complimented for a task well-accomplished is the humble, unassuming acceptance of praise. Yet, many of us also have a hard time with this.<\/p>\n<p>I am as guilty of this embarrassed reception of praise as the next person. My invariable response to a compliment is, not so much to scrutinize its sincerity, but to qualify my response: \u201cThanks, I really enjoyed our game. I\u2019ve put a lot of practice in recently, so I guess it\u2019s finally paying off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A simpler and more polite response would be to simply say, \u201cThanks,\u201d and allow the natural glow of gratification to wash over me. The compliment is merited and doesn\u2019t need to be questioned or qualified in any measure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Too busy to acknowledge our worth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because our corporate, rapid-fire society is all about busily doing and producing, many of us simply get depleted by the energy of producing. Consequently, as exhausted producers, we have little or no time for the quiet, more graceful art of receiving; nor, I surmise, do we place much value on the place and importance of this art.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are so programmed to believe that all merit and praise needs to be rigorously earned, that we\u2019re simply ill-equipped to receive.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ironically, for many, it\u2019s an arduous chore!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s taking a moment to humbly acknowledge our accomplishments as parents, teachers, companions, or lovers; or simply allowing the magnetic energy of a new moon to bathe us in its orbit, a sense of awe, wonder, and gratitude is truly the apropos response to life\u2019s plentiful gifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlos Santana (legendary Latino musician) in his recently published memoir, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, notes how when someone pays him a compliment, his response is, \u201cThank you, I am a reflection of your light.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, that\u2019s a response I can easily live with!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The grace of humble, unassuming receptivity, like any grace, flows freely in our little hearts. It\u2019s worthwhile, every now and then, to allow it to breathe freely. Unobstructed by the strictures and rigors of daily living and its multifarious demands.
