Oh Friday, there you are. Takes for all. One Climbing up a mountain of school this weekend because everything in the universe is due on Monday. Did much better this quarter of getting stuff done (that’s a technical homeschooling expression) in a timely fashion, but even with all the teeth gritting due diligence, there is no way for me humanly stay on top of every quiz and assignment. You will always find me, two days before the quarter ends, alternately... Read more
“Why Are Christians So Sex Obsessed?” The rejoinder to which would be, "Look at yourself in the mirror, bucko." And, "Are you kidding?" Read more
I confess that even though delays and cancellations for snow concern me not at all, because my children will do all the school regardless, I like to wake up in the still early hours of a snowy morning and scroll through all the weather related announcements anyway. I read each school district over to myself and imagine all those children, hoping and waiting to see Their School on the list, to hear the breath of joy and relief when they... Read more
This is a great article. And ironically, explicitly says what Ansari accidentally, and in muted poignant tones, illustrates in the first season of Master of None. I can’t help feeling sorry for him and for her and for everyone. The cultural custom of going from coffee to bed is a heartbreaking one, a shattering one, a tragic one. I’ve been listening to Anthony Esolen’s Out of the Ashes, the substance of which I am finding I have a thousand quibbles,... Read more
Good Morning! Did up a nice little podcast for you on this snowy MLK day. Matt reads off imprecatory curses from Facebook, I play a clip from Stephen Furtic’s new rap video, and we argue together about the historical nature of the Viking’s winning that sportsing game yesterday. It should cheer you out of the grimmest depression. Let us now consider the matter of Links. Here, first, is that rap video. Although, I do want to offer a caution, I’m... Read more
My has been, fading, rust belt town yesterday joined the ranks of those more cosmopolitan climes with the dubious distinction of hosting a drag queen story time at the local library. It was a miserably cold afternoon. The wind whipped up and swept snow back and forth across the landscape, the roads, my porch and then windshield when I tried to leave my house in the early evening. The local paper reported that ‘dozens’ came out for the story time.... Read more
As far as I’m concerned, this is the blog post of the year. I know it’s only the second week of January, but I’m going to go ahead and declare the winner. First of all because it’s the best story in the world, and we desperately need brilliantly hopeful and cheerful stories, but second of all because Bekah is So Right to juxtapose the wrestling of Jacob with God with the Struggle of Books. I would say that at least... Read more
[You can’t have coffee here unless you go to Africa.] It’s Friday and it’s raining, so that must mean Takes. One Not sure how it works out this way, but as usual I worked really really hard all week, but all the work I thought I was doing, or was going to do, is still there for me to keep working on through the weekend. Like, such as, for example, as it were, I cleaned the house all last week... Read more
You, if you’re an abusing pastor, have to get out of your pulpit. Now. Confess your sins. Repent. Don’t get a book deal. Don’t start a blog. Don’t invent a speaking ministry. Read more
