Well, I\u2019ve had seven cups of tea, and washed away the grime of the car, and slept more than three hours, so it must be that we\u2019ve survived the first leg. The children are all draped about on my grandmother\u2019s immaculate Belgian furniture\u2013the very same from when I was toddling round three decades ago. They are arguing about how often it\u2019s acceptable to use the word \u201clike\u201d in a single sentence. So far I think we\u2019re like hours away from a consensus. My grandmother is cooking and my mother is doing the laundry and I\u2019m sitting here like a stupid entitled special snowflake. As soon as I\u2019ve posted this I\u2019m going to leap and clean something, anything, to salve my guilty conscience.<\/p>\n
The drive from San Antonio to Murrieta was completely gorgeous. It was so stunning that the children\u2019s gaze was often arrested away from their glimmering screens to gape at the mountains and valleys and those huge amazing cacti that I had thought existed only in movies.<\/p>\n
