Lebanese host silences sexist Muslim scholar who told her to ‘shut up’ March 10, 2015

Lebanese television host Rima Karaki silences London based Islamist scholar Hani Sibai after being told to “shut up” because “you are a woman.”

Karaki pulled the plug on the sexist Muslim scholar after he refused to cooperate in an interview discussing ISIS. During the interview, Sibai insulted his host after being asked to address the questions being put to him.

After some heated back and forth, an angry Sebai snarled:

“Are you done? Shut up so I can talk.”

A stunned Karaki asked:

“How can a respected sheikh like yourself tell a TV host to shut up?”

An obviously agitated Sibai shot back:

“I am respected whether you like it or not. It’s beneath me to be interviewed by you. You are a woman who…”

At that point Karaki had Sebai’s microphone cut, noting:

“Just one second. Either there is mutual respect, or the conversation is over.”

The clip of Karaki taking charge and standing up to the sexist Muslim scholar has since gone viral, and many are calling Karaki a hero. In an interview with The Guardian about the incident, Karaki said “I don’t feel like a hero, it was self-respect” noting she had a duty to stand up for herself.
