Gross: GOP Rep. Trent Franks, a “family values” conservative Christian, is resigning after trying to impregnate female staffers.
According to reports, the married congressman approached multiple women on his staff, asking them if they would bear his child, and become surrogates for him and his wife. As one might imagine, the female staffers being approached by Franks were alarmed and disgusted by his bizarre request to impregnate staffers.
Politico reports “Female aides fretted Franks wanted to have sex to impregnate them.” More from the story:
Arizona Rep. Trent Franks allegedly made unwanted advances toward female staffers in his office and retaliated against one who rebuffed him, according to House GOP sources with knowledge of a complaint against him.
The sources said Franks approached two female staffers about acting as a potential surrogate for him and his wife, who has struggled with fertility issues for years. But the aides were concerned that Franks was asking to have sexual relations with them. It was not clear to the women whether he was asking about impregnating the women through sexual intercourse or in vitro fertilization. Franks opposes abortion rights as well as procedures that discard embryos.
Politico also reports that “Franks tried to persuade a female aide that they were in love by having her read an article that described how a person knows they’re in love with someone.”
The Associated Press reports Franks offered one staffer $5 million to carry his child, and “asked at least four times if she’d be willing to act as a surrogate in exchange for money”:
A former aide to Republican Rep. Trent Franks has told The Associated Press the congressman repeatedly pressed her to carry his child, at one point offering her $5 million to act as a surrogate.
The eight-term Arizona lawmaker abruptly resigned Friday, bowing to an ultimatum from Speaker Paul Ryan. Ryan told Franks that he would refer the allegations to the Ethics Committee, and urged him to step aside.
The former staffer said the congressman asked at least four times if she’d be willing to act as a surrogate in exchange for money. Franks, in his statement announcing his resignation, said he and his wife have struggled with infertility.
How did Trent Franks get $5 million, you ask? The @phoenixnewtimes found his net worth, which comes from his shares in an oil company, skyrocketed to $33 million after he voted repeatedly to deregulate the oil industry. https://t.co/6OcrjeuYk0 https://t.co/7y7A3CGIeF

In a letter announcing his resignation, Franks had the audacity to claim that he was the real victim:
In the midst of this current cultural and media climate, I am deeply convinced I would be unable to complete a fair House Ethics investigation before distorted and sensationalized versions of this story would put me, my family, my staff, and my noble colleagues in the House of Representatives through hyperbolized public excoriation.
Rather than allow a sensationalized trial by media damage those things I love most, this morning I notified House leadership that I will be leaving Congress …
What an ass.
In a statement issued Friday, Franks said he is resigning effective immediately.
Bottom line: Another GOP “family values” conservative Christian lawmaker turns out to be a super creep, and is forced to resign in disgrace.
And so it goes.
