Bigotry in the name of “religious freedom” – President Trump supports businesses posting anti-gay signs stating they will not serve LGBT customers.
When asked during yesterday’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters the president has no problem with businesses displaying anti-gay signs.
The question came after the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments concerning the Masterpiece Cakeshop case in which an anti-gay baker refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple because of his religious beliefs, an action which violated Colorado’s nondiscrimination statute.
After a Trump administration lawyer argued that bakers should be legally allowed put signs in their windows saying that they don’t make cakes for gay weddings, Sanders was asked if Trump supported that sort of legalized discrimination. The New York Times’s Michael Shear asked:
The lawyer for the solicitor general’s office for the administration said today in the Supreme Court if it would be legal, possible for a baker to put a sign in his window saying we don’t bake cakes for gay weddings. Does the president agree that that would be ok?
The president certainly supports religious liberty and that’s something he talked about during the campaign and has upheld since taking office.
When asked if that included support for signs that deny service to gay people, Sanders replied:
I believe that would include that.

In other words, President Trump thinks legalized, formalized discrimination against LGBT people is perfectly acceptable.
Trump’s callous attitude towards the LGBT community is deplorable. Last October, Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued new instructions to federal agencies giving government workers, federal contractors, and others legal permission to ignore federal bans on discrimination against women and LGBT people.
Conservative Christians celebrated their new license to discriminate.
Also last October, reports circulated that Trump often mocks Vice President Pence’s conservative Christianity and once joked Pence “wants to hang” all gay people.
And in yet another example of cruel bigotry, last July Trump announced that transgender individuals would no longer be allowed to serve in the military “in any capacity.”
Bottom line: Trump and the Trump administration reject civility and human decency in favor of bigotry and hatred, all in the name of “religious freedom.”
