Lawyer For Cardinal Pell Minimizes Child Rape As ‘Plain Vanilla Sexual Penetration’

Lawyer For Cardinal Pell Minimizes Child Rape As ‘Plain Vanilla Sexual Penetration’ February 28, 2019

For Catholics, child rape is no big deal: Lawyer for convicted child rapist Cardinal Pell asks for leniency because the rapes were “no more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration case.”

In yet another demonstration of the complete moral failure of the Catholic Church, Robert Richter, the lawyer for Cardinal Pell, who was recently convicted of raping two choir boys, asked for leniency during Pell’s sentencing hearing by trying to minimize the sexual assault and rape of two 13-year-old choir boys in the 1990’s.

Richter told the court that the rape of two choir boys was no big deal, describing the crime as:

No more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration case where the child is not actively participating…

Wow. To describe child rape as “no more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration” is beyond despicable.

The Guardian reports that Pell’s lawyer also tried to minimize the child rape conviction by telling the court:

(Pell exerted) No force greater than was required to achieve penetration.

Pell’s lawyer also tried to minimize the power differential between Cardinal Pell and two 13-year-old choir boys, telling the court:

The only differential of power is that he is an adult – for reasons inexplicable – with an urge to do what he did. He is not abusing his position as archbishop but he is abusing his position … as a grown man.

To argue that Pell was not abusing his position as a prominent leader of the church when he raped the two-choir boys at church after Mass is simply dishonest.

After media began to report on Richter’s deplorable attempt to defend Pell, he offered an apology for trying to minimize the rape of the two choir boys. In a statement he wrote:

In seeking to mitigate sentence I used a wholly inappropriate phrase for which I apologise profusely to all who interpreted it in a way it was never intended: it was in no way meant to belittle or minimise the suffering and hurt of victims of sex abuse, and in retrospect I can see why it caused great offence to many.

Last December, Cardinal Pell, who until quite recently was the Vatican’s third most powerful official and a close adviser to Pope Francis, was convicted in Australia on charges that he sexually abused two choir boys in the late 1990s.

Pell, 77, faces up to 50 years on one count of sexually penetrating a child and four counts of an indecent act with a child at his March 13 sentencing.

Bottom line: Lawyer for convicted child rapist Cardinal Pell asks for leniency because the rapes were “no more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration case where the child is not actively participating…”
