\u201cSuccess\u201d by catherinedncr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>

One day while I was on Facebook, I came across an article titled \u201cScience Says Parents of Successful Kids Have These 13 Things in Common\u201d<\/a> posted on my friend\u2019s timeline, and it caught my attention.\u00a0 Being a parent myself, I wanted to see if I was following a good formula.\u00a0 The article had the following thirteen things that parents of successful kids do:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. They make their kids do chores.<\/li>\n
  2. They teach their kids social skills.<\/li>\n
  3. They have high expectations.<\/li>\n
  4. They have healthy relationships with each other.<\/li>\n
  5. They\u2019ve attained higher educational levels.<\/li>\n
  6. They\u00a0teach their kids math early on.<\/li>\n
  7. They develop a relationship with their kids.<\/li>\n
  8. They\u2019re less stressed.<\/li>\n
  9. They\u00a0value effort over avoiding failure.<\/li>\n
  10. The moms work.<\/li>\n
  11. They have a\u00a0higher socioeconomic status.<\/li>\n
  12. They are \u2018authoritative\u2019 rather than \u2018authoritarian\u2019 or \u2018permissive.\u2019<\/li>\n
  13. They teach \u2018grit.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I particularly enjoyed reading number 3, and 9. I felt pretty good about my success rate with my teen, but then I realized that not every teen has a parental figure able to help them succeed.\u00a0 Parents are often stressed, and they don\u2019t know how to have productive relationships with their teens. \u00a0I thought further about those young people on the streets who were kicked out of their homes for being LGBTQI.\u00a0\u00a0 Who teaches them social skills, high expectations, or how to value effort over avoiding failure?<\/p>\n

    As youth advocates, ministers, and leaders, we are sometimes the next best person\u2014if not the only person\u2014helping a teen find hope. Both in a secular setting and in youth ministry, we strive to teach young people to listen, and we show them to solve problems both inside and outside the classroom.\u00a0 We do a lot of grace-based coaching and then we stand in awe when we are occasionally honored to see God\u2019s transforming power through them.<\/p>\n

    When I recently read Luke 7:12-14, I felt God was talking to me about teens.\u00a0 I particularly like the way The Message puts it: \u201cInvite the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks.\u00a0 They won\u2019t be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned \u2014 oh it will be returned.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Teens are are a group from whom we largely can\u2019t expect anything in return. We sometimes \u00a0won\u2019t even see the fruits of our labor quickly enough for our egos or even know if our message is sticking in their sometimes Teflon-like minds. However, I believe that the Holy Spirit reaches through our lives as spiritual mentors and leaders to change the faith and the narrative of a young person who needs guidance.<\/p>\n

    Through silly games, lock-ins, mission trips, pizza, and covered chocolate marshmallows, may they see how much love and admiration we have for them. May young people feel Christ embodied through us, and may they feel the love and warmth of a congregation and community willing to stand with them and show them God\u2019s unconditional love.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
