I usually put up photos of flags and fireworks for July 4th.
But this year our democracy is under attack from the “new” Republican Party, which is fascist right down to its billionaire bones. The “new” GQP is backed by a right wing media that lies with its every word, a whore right wing clergy and an army of increasingly violent wackadoodle followers.
All this is being financed and pushed by an organized group of billionaires who, thanks to Republicans in elected office, are richer than many governments. These billionaires can and do use their money without any accountability and in a covert way to undermine our government and bend it to their will. These billionaires are clearly aiming toward truncating our democracy and recreating America as their own fascist oligarchy. We are on the cusp of the destruction of our Republic from within.
Instead of photos of flags and fireworks, I want to post this comment by Thomas Paine. Paine said this in the darkest days of the American Revolution, when only fools and desperate patriots thought America had a chance of being born. We the People won then and We the People can win the fight to keep our freedom now, in this year of 2021. Last November, we defeated the monstrous right wing psychopath in the White House. We put down an American Hitler with the ballot instead of the bullet.
Our job now is to understand, accept and act on the fact that this victory was a battle and not the whole war. The evil doers who want to destroy our democracy are getting crazier and crazier. We cannot let them snuff out the great light of hope and freedom that is America. We are alive now for this purpose: To stand for freedom and justice and to defend by legal means, sacrifice and hard work, this great American democracy against its attackers from within.
