Denmark\u2019s government has banned the religious killing of animals for the production of halal and kosher meat.<\/p>\n

The move has been labeled \u201ca clear interference in religious freedom,\u201d by the non-profit group Halal, while Jewish leaders are calling it \u201canti-Semitism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s deputy minister of religious services, Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan said, \u201cEuropean anti-Semitism is showing its true colors.\u201d The Danish group Halal, said it was a \u201cclear interference in religious freedom limiting the rights of Muslims and Jews to practice their religion in Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n

The predictable blog posts<\/a>\u00a0labeling Jewish and Muslim opposition to the move as \u201cmuch ado about nothing much\u201d and just more religious overreaction have already started.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s seems ironic to me that Denmark euthanizes\u00a0people<\/a>\u00a0and, lately,\u00a0giraffes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Denmark\u2019s government has brought in a ban on the religious slaughter of animals for the production of halal and kosher meat, after years of campaigning from welfare activists.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0The change to the law, announced last week and effective as of yesterday, has been called \u201canti-Semitism\u201d by Jewish leaders and \u201ca clear interference in religious freedom\u201d by the non-profit group Danish Halal.<\/p>\n

European regulations require animals to be stunned before they are slaughtered, but grants exemptions on religious grounds. For meat to be considered kosher under Jewish law or halal under Islamic law, the animal must be conscious when killed.<\/p>\n

Yet defending his government\u2019s decision to remove this exemption, the minister for agriculture and food Dan J\u00f8rgensen told Denmark\u2019s TV2 that \u201canimal rights come before religion\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
