On Wednesday a panel of experts in Washington reported that governments are closing more churches, fining and arresting their religious leaders, and destroying church literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 12px; font-size: 14px; font-family: Optima; color: #040404;\">\u201cTwenty years ago when the Soviet Union fell apart, collapsed, when the Berlin Wall fell, everybody was sort of excited about all the future possibilities. What happened?\u201d Victor Ham, vice president for the Billy Graham Evangelical Association Crusades, said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 12px; font-size: 14px; font-family: Optima; color: #040404;\">The situation might not be a return to the Soviet era, but the signs spell trouble.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 12px; font-size: 14px; font-family: Optima; color: #040404;\">\u201cChurches are being torched, crosses are being burned. There\u2019s a lot of anti-Semitism, a lot of negative things appearing in the press about different organizations. Individual pastors are reluctant to speak out against abuses and restrictions. China: Christian Persecution in China Rises Over 40 Percent in 2012 \u00a0<\/strong>ChinaAid, a Texas-based Christian non-profit organization that monitors religious freedom in China, said in its 2012 annual report on Monday that the Chinese government continues its uptick of persecution against Christians in the country for the seventh consecutive year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; font-size: 14px; font-family: Optima; color: #040404;\">The report examines 132 persecution cases involving 4,919 people, finding that persecution incidences rose 41.9 percent from 2011. Despite the severe oppression, there is a growing underground church movement of an estimated 400,000 Christians. Dalai Lama\u2019s Statements Against Conversion May Increase Christian Persecution \u00a0<\/strong>Mumbai (AsiaNews) \u2013 The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Tibetan Buddhism<\/a>, said he was against conversions and changing from one religion to another. His position is likely to be seen as support for the policies of the radical Hindu groups and the anti-conversion laws that exist in some Indian states.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #040404; font-family: Optima; font-size: 14px;\">During recent speech, he touched on the issue of conversions. \u201cI do not like conversions,\u201d he said, because they have a negative impact [on society]. \u201cThe two parties, that of the converted and the community abandoned by him, begin to fight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 12px; font-size: 14px; font-family: Optima; color: #040404;\">As an example of the negative influence produced by conversions, he cited the violence against the Australian missionary Graham Staines, burnt alive in his car with his two sons, and the violence and destruction still ongoing in Orissa and Karnataka.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 12px; font-size: 14px; font-family: Optima; color: #040404;\">This is not the first time that the Dalai Lama has spoken against conversions. Last November, at Christ University in Bangalore, he repeated a similar concept: on the one hand, he spoke of religious freedom and on the other of the need to avoid conversions: \u201cAny religion \u2013 he said \u2013 should be limited to service-oriented interventions, such as providing people education and health care, not indulging in conversions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 12px; font-size: 14px; font-family: Optima; color: #040404;\">Cardinal Oswald Gracias, who personally knows the Dalai Lama, comments to AsiaNews that the freedom to change religion is a fundamental human right and can not be obscured for any convenience. Hamilton authored a 2005 law hailed as the most significant piece of pro-life legislation in Oklahoma in 30 years. She also passed the bill outlawing elective abortions in state-funded hospitals She has passed pro life bills requiring informed consent, parental notification, and limiting forced abortions. She also passed a law allowing prosecutors to file criminal charges against anyone who intentionally causes the death of an unborn child by harming the mother. Rep. Hamilton has also authored legislation ensuring taxpayers are not forced to subsidize elective abortions Rep. Hamilton was one of six original co-founders of first rape crisis center in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City Democrat has worked to bring a wide range of groups together to fight on the behalf of abused women, including the creation of the Annual Day of Prayer for an End to Violence Against Women at the Oklahoma Capitol. Rep. Hamilton has been married for 30 years to her husband, Rodney, and the couple has two grown sons.
