He wanted the death penalty so badly that he<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/va-executes-convicted-killer-who-sought-death-penalty\/2013\/01\/16\/89802e00-6015-11e2-9940-6fc488f3fecd_story.html?tid=pm_local_pop\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u00a0killed other inmates so he would receive it.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">It struck me that the United States is already helping perfectly healthy people commit suicide. <\/span><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;       \n\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n\n<tr>    \n\n<td>    \n\n<div>    \n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/td>\n\n   <\/tr>\n\n<\/table>\n\n &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">It just seems there <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">isn\u2019t<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">\u00a0as much of an uproar about it because they are criminals. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">If we stop to think about life issues, it is shocking how delicately each issue is woven into another. When one suffers, they all suffer.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">Slowly but surely \u00a0the \u201cseamless garment\u201d of life\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">in our culture\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">is being torn apart<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">The phrase \u201cseamless garment\u201d was first used\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">i<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">n connection with the interrelatedness of all life issues\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">by Roman Catholic pacifist\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eileen_Egan\" style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eileen Egan<\/a><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">. And Cardinal Bernardin picked up this line of thought when he developed the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Consistent_life_ethic\" style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Consistent Ethic of Life<\/a><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">\u00a0in 1983.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">The words \u201cseamless garment\u201d are drawn from the Gospel of John, when, at the crucifixion, the soldiers cast lots for the clothing Jesus had been wearing: \u201cthe tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down\u201d (Jn 19:24).<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333;font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Unfortunately, the \u201cseamless garment\u201d approach has gotten a bad rap because it has been misused by Catholics who focus on some life issues but reject or downplay the most important life issue of our times: abortion.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">But just because something is misused does not mean we should cease using it, (we would have to stop reading the Bible real fast if we lived by that logic).<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Life is a seamless garment, a garment that originates in the hands of God. The garment of Jesus itself was woven with materials found in the natural world, created by God.\u00a0<\/span>Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the p<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">erson who most likely wove the seamless garment. For me, this represents the important role that we, as humans,\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">have<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">to play in maintaining and protecting the seamless garment of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">So her<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">e is the practical, everyday application of the \u201cseamless garment\u201d philosophy in my mind:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">We can go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marchforlife.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">March for Life<\/a>. We can minister to prisoners. We can picket for religious freedom. We can post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/badcatholic\/2013\/01\/happy-40th-anniversary-baby.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">brilliant and hilarious blog posts<\/a>\u00a0on life issues. We can do all these things and more \u2013 and they are important.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">But we can also do something even more concrete, every single day.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">Anytime we love others with the extravagant, unconditional love, that mirrors God\u2019s love, we are putting another stitch in the seamless garment of life, and bolstering the fabric of human dignity. We do this simply by showing others how important they are and how precious their life is.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">Loving others is one of the most important aspects of truly respecting life \u2013 one that we all manage to neglect quite often, (as is evident by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scross.co.za\/2013\/01\/scorched-earth-catholics\/\" style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ongoing online discussions<\/a><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\"> about <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.adw.org\/2013\/01\/prophets-arent-perfect-theyre-just-prophets\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">disrespect<\/a>\u00a0among Christians online).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">This sounds simple, but I believe that in its simplicity lies a key but oft overlooked truth.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">Our tireless work to promote respect for human life is made meaningless if we do not practice it in the everyday interactions of our lives.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;line-height: 14.25pt\">While others tear it asunder, we can add another stitch in the seamless garment of life \u2013 practically, every single day \u2013 by respecting those around us and deeply loving them into believing that their life and all life is precious.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of you probably read the recent heartbreaking news of Marc and Eddy, deaf twins who\u00a0requested, and were granted, euthanization in Belgium\u00a0after discovering they were going blind.\u00a0Later this year, Belgium\u2019s ruling party is set to consider\u00a0allowing the euthanasia of children and Alzheimer\u2019s sufferers.\u00a0 This news was on my mind recently when I read about Robert [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2071,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-44","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
