About a year ago, I decided that I\u2019d had enough of bad news. Not like news-worthy bad news, just bad news like:<\/p>\n

sorry, you didn\u2019t get the job<\/li>\n
nice book proposal, but we can\u2019t publish it because you are not famous<\/li>\n
no, we don\u2019t want to run that article<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
and so on. Minor bad news, news that\u2019s only bad for writers who have this nagging urge to have someone read what they have written.<\/p>\n
And then, I realized that I was six or twelve years behind the times.<\/p>\n

{this is actually more than 2 years ago, but it captures an essential writing mama setup: the coffee, the haggard face, the child in the lap.}<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
I realized, I can make my own good<\/em> news.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
And so this blog was born. I\u2019ve tried to post something\u2013even if only an image or a list\u2013every day<\/em>, and doing so has been more helpful than I thought possible. Knowing that some<\/em>one would be reading (even if only my mom and my husband) kept me writing, and doing it every day, well, kept me doing it every day.<\/strong> Regularly. Which makes writing easier. I\u2019ve never been one to consistently keep much of a journal, bit knowing that, say, Nancy V. would be reading?\u00a0That<\/em> kept me writing.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s one other thing: blogging can be an exercise in paying attention. It makes me ask, as I go around living and breathing and reading and eating:<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n
what is interesting\/beautiful\/ugly\/strange about this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
and in asking questions<\/p>\n
\n
why does this book\/object\/article\/idea call forth such a strong response from me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
and even in something like empathy<\/p>\n
\n
how might other people hear\/interpret this? will it make sense? will it encourage people? what will<\/em> it do?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
So I have to say, friends, that I am grateful for your gentle readership. Thank you for your comments and your emails\u2013I read and treasure each one.<\/p>\n
Having the chance to write\u2013and to be read<\/em>\u2013every day!\u2013has become good news enough for me.<\/p>\n
