Continuing right along in Empowered Birth Awareness Week<\/em>, I\u2019d like to highlight the amazing work of Ruth Lubic,<\/a> who, in 1993, used the $375,000 \u201cGenius\u201d Award from the MacArthur Foundation to found a health and birth center<\/a> in Washington, DC, which, at the time, had some of the nation\u2019s highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates.<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\nIn the family birth center\u2019s own words:<\/p>\nIn 2011 our midwives assisted in the births of almost 250 babies. Our Cesarean section rate is just over 16%, way below the national average of 34%, and only 5% of babies were born preterm. Our facility is top-of-the-line and our outcomes are excellent. We have comfortable birthing rooms that include the option of water births.<\/em><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2012\/09\/picture-0201.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3255\" title=\"Picture 020\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2012\/09\/picture-0201.jpg\" alt=\"one of the rooms at the birthing center.\" width=\"692\" height=\"519\"><\/a><\/p>\nMore than just a birth center, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.developingfamilies.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">DFC of DC<\/a> offers healthcare that\u2019s truly comprehensive and more-or-less a one-stop shopping experience, with \u201cfamily centered women\u2019s and children\u2019s health care, child care services, family resource and support services, confidential counseling, and adult education.\u201d<\/p>\nWhat I find so impressive about this project is that it is focused on serving people who are at highest risk for poor birth outcomes\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.communityofhopedc.org\/healthcare\/birth-center-faqs#Q2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">regardless of their ability to pay<\/a>\u2014<\/em>and that it emphasizes evidence-based care as opposed to the medical model that too frequently puts convenience and efficiency for the hospital<\/strong> ahead of what\u2019s best for women.<\/p>\nMoreover, it returns agency<\/em> to women and their growing families in the context of community-based, holistic care<\/em>\u2013which, I think, gets back to what successful childbirth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Midwifes-Tale-Martha-Ballard-1785-1812\/dp\/0679733760\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">was always about. <\/a><\/p>\nIf pain and fear in childbirth is a sign of the brokenness of the world, this work in DC <\/strong>(and similar work elsewhere) is most certainly New Creation work. <\/strong><\/p>\nThanks be to God for Ruth Lubic, who has used her gifts to empower women at risk. <\/em><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Continuing right along in Empowered Birth Awareness Week, I\u2019d like to highlight the amazing work of Ruth Lubic, who, in 1993, used the $375,000 \u201cGenius\u201d Award from the MacArthur Foundation to found a health and birth center in Washington, DC, which, at the time, had some of the nation\u2019s highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
