You may recognize her from the film <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Super_Size_Me\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Supersize Me<\/em><\/a> or <em><a href=\"http:\/\/truck-farm.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Truck Farm<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/print_8x10_300dpi_marionnestle_8110535-500x625.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-354\" title=\"PRINT_8X10_300dpi_MarionNestle_8110535-500x625\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/print_8x10_300dpi_marionnestle_8110535-500x625.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\"><\/a>\n<p>Although Dr. Nestle is a legit scientist and scholar, her writing is clear and readable, even entertaining. The first book of hers I read was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Food-Politics-Influences-Nutrition-California\/dp\/0520240677\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Food Politics<\/a>, a book that outlines the ways in which the food industry (aka \u2018Big Food\u2019) influences government policies\u2013by employing lobbyists who fight hard against any government message that clearly targets any of Big Food\u2019s offerings\u2013and shapes nutrition research (by funding \u201cresearch\u201d studies that are thinly veiled advertising campaigns). In short, Nestle shows us how Big Food wields its re$ource$ to keep the public as confused as possible as to what constitutes a healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/food-politics.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-355\" title=\"food-politics\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/food-politics.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"200\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Meanwhile, basic dietary advice never changes and is adequately summed up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/pov\/foodinc\/eating_made_simple.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">thus<\/a>: \u201ceat less; move more; eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains; and avoid too much junk food.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>My reaction on first reading <em>Food Politics <\/em>5 years ago:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-356\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/photo-on-2011-08-17-at-10-45-2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-356\" title=\"Photo on 2011-08-17 at 10.45 #2\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/photo-on-2011-08-17-at-10-45-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">{Re-enactment based on factual events. Grandma's portrait looks approvingly on.}<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nestle\u2019s more recent book, <em>What to Eat<\/em>, was called \u201cindispensable\u201d by none other than Michael Pollan, and it\u2019s close to that. It\u2019s basically an aisle-by-aisle guidebook to the typical American grocery store\u2013more practical and even more readable than <em>Food Politics<\/em>\u2013and she patiently runs through the wealth of choices available and shows you how to make sense of competing nutrition claims and other industry mumbo-jumbo.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, she provides clear, sensible answers to questions like these:<\/p>\n<p>Is yogurt healthy? Which bread should I buy? Which baby formula is the best, and how do I decide between organic, conventional, and locally grown produce? (And many, many more.)<\/p>\n<p>Always, always, her understanding of nutrition grows from a deep awareness of ecological, social, cultural, and ethical concerns\u2013and as a result, her recommendations are wise, warm, witty\u2013never dour or doctrinaire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/images3.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-358\" title=\"images\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/484\/2011\/08\/images3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/rachelmariestone\/files\/2011\/08\/51hr5rrgal-_bo2204203200_pisitb-sticker-arrow-clicktopright35-76_aa300_sh20_ou01_.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s one of my favorite quotes from Marion Nestle, illustrating the futility of isolating one nutrient (for example, lycopene) and studying its effect on health:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:center\"><strong>\u201cThe problem with nutrient-by-nutrient nutrition science \u2026 is that it takes the nutrient out the context of the food, the food out of the context of the diet, and the diet out of the context of the lifestyle.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Get that? It\u2019s the lifestyle\u2013not this or that micronutrient\u2013that brings wellness\u2013lifestyles, I\u2019d venture, that include eating <em>with others<\/em> and <em>with joy. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>And I think Dr. Nestle would agree.
