{"id":3798,"date":"2016-07-28T09:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T13:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/rationaldoubt\/?p=3798"},"modified":"2016-07-28T07:34:37","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T11:34:37","slug":"3798","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/rationaldoubt\/2016\/07\/3798\/","title":{"rendered":"Clergy Project Founders \u2013 Together at Last at FFRF Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I have exciting news for anyone who knows about The Clergy Project or who has followed it since its inception in 2011.\u00a0This October, at the annual Freedom from Religion Foundation (<a href=\"https:\/\/ffrf.org\/outreach\/convention\/2016-schedule\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">FFRF) Convention<\/a> in Pittsburgh, four of its founders will be meeting together in person for the first time.\u00a0 They are Dan Barker, co-president of FFRF, Dan Dennett, who is a featured speaker at the convention, \u201cAdam Mann\u201d and me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/468\/2016\/07\/ffrf-conference-2016-good.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3801\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3801 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/468\/2016\/07\/ffrf-conference-2016-good-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"ffrf conference 2016 good\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What makes it exciting is that until now, one of us -\u201cAdam Mann\u201d \u2013 has been undercover as an atheist clergy.\u00a0\u00a0 Adam was one of the original five participants in the Dennett-LaScola pilot study, <a href=\"https:\/\/ase.tufts.edu\/cogstud\/dennett\/papers\/Preachers_who_are_not_believers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">\u201cPreachers Who Are Not Believers\u201d<\/a> that came out in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>I interviewed Adam in 2009, shortly after Easter, when he, after a year of independent study (see his extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/rationaldoubt\/files\/2015\/01\/Adam-Study-List-2008-to-2012-revised.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">reading list<\/a>), accepted that he was an atheist.\u00a0 He originally contacted Dan Barker, seeking a kindred soul, and soon found himself talking to me in a small town about 30 miles from his home and 340 miles from mine.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want to risk being seen meeting several times with a Yankee lady with DC tags.\u00a0 Once there, he noted something even more suspicious \u2013 an Obama sticker on my bumper.\u00a0 (He spotted the car in the parking lot and figured it must be me!)<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, when <a href=\"http:\/\/clergyproject.org\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Clergy Project<\/a> was becoming a reality, Dan Barker, who had stayed in touch with Adam, asked him to be involved in setting it up.\u00a0 So there we were, working as colleagues to create this new entity \u2013 a private online meeting place for current and former religious professionals without supernatural beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t say much more now, because I don\u2019t want to steal his thunder at the convention.\u00a0 Suffice it to say that after seven years of secret atheism and making positive changes in his life, he wants to be himself.\u00a0 He wants to be \u201cout\u201d and able to express himself freely. \u00a0And he can\u2019t think of a better place to begin the process than with the people who got him started down that road.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few words from Adam:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAfter trying so hard to carefully ease out of ministry I have finally realized that I can never be completely open, honest and authentic without making this a public announcement.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019ll hear more from Adam, including his real name (at last!) after the conference. Meanwhile, for those clergy project members and others who can be there in person, we\u2019d love to see you in Pittsburgh, Oct 7-9. It\u2019s a great town. I should know; I grew up just fifty miles away in New Castle. Make sure you get there on Friday night the 7<sup>th<\/sup>. That\u2019s when Adam and I are scheduled to speak.
