You may already know Mary Lou Bruner, who is notorious for making false statements like President Barack Obama was formerly a gay prostitute? She lost her bid to represent Republicans in the November election for East Texas in District 9.
Kathy Miller Texas Freedom Network, a Church/State separation watchdog group, had this to say:
“Texas escaped an education train wreck tonight. If Bruner had ultimately won election to the board, she would have instantly become the most embarrassingly uninformed and divisive member on a board that already too often puts politics ahead of making sure our kids get a sound education. We commend the majority of East Texas voters for their wisdom in this particular race.”
Texans can be relieved that we are spared this conspiracy nut in charge of what Texas schoolchildren should know.
Bruner lost to a former teacher, Lufkin native, and fellow Republican Dr. Keven Ellis. He is a self-confessed “proud Republican” who believes conservative principles support his belief that:
“Texas must be at the forefront of providing a 21st Century education and empowering local districts to meet the needs of their communities.”
However in his favor, he is better than the alternative Bruner, who is a documented liar.
In addition, video from a recent campaign event showed superintendents in her district strongly criticizing Bruner for misleading statements about student performance and other issues, including false claims that she had met with various superintendents (who actually were present in the room and contradicted her claims).
Kudos to East Texas for seeing Bruner for the sham she is. Let’s hope that in November they also see that the Texas GOP doesn’t put their money where their mouth is for Texas school children and they elect Stephen F. Austin University professor and Democrat Amanda Rudolph.
