At our house, the children play a game. I invented it. It\u2019s called \u201cFor this one moment in time let\u2019s pretend that Mom has a clue.\u201d It\u2019s a fun game and saves lots of time. There really are no rules, but I\u2019ll give you an example of how we play it.<\/p>\n
me: \u201cThe word bus only has one \u2018s\u2019 in it.\u201d<\/p>\n
#3: \u201cAre you sure? Because it sounds like it has two.\u201d<\/p>\n
me: \u201cI\u2019m sure, just one \u2018s.'\u201d<\/p>\n
#3: \u201cBecause, Mom, it really sounds like there should be two. Listen \u2018Busssssssss.'\u201d<\/p>\n
me: \u201cPlay the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
#3: (Skeptically) \u201cOkay\u2026\u201d Erases the extra \u2018s.\u2019<\/p>\n
Playing the game saves us a lot of arguments. I wish more people would learn how to play it. People like the dentist\u2019s office who called this morning to confirm my appointment for next week and mispronounced our last name.<\/p>\n
me: \u201cI know our name ends with a \u2018ch\u2019, but you pronounce it like a \u2018k.'\u201d<\/p>\n
her: \u201cReally? That\u2019s weird.\u201d<\/p>\n
me: \u201cI know, but that\u2019s how it\u2019s said.\u201d<\/p>\n
her: \u201cWhy is that? Why not just spell it with a \u2018ck\u2019 instead?\u201d<\/p>\n
me: \u201cBecause then it wouldn\u2019t be our name.\u201d<\/p>\n
her: \u201cBut it would be easier to say.\u201d<\/p>\n
If she were my child, I would simply say, \u201cI know, but let\u2019s play the game\u201d and that would be the end of it. She would simply shrug and go on instead of debating spelling and pronunciation with me at 8:00 in the morning. I\u2019m not ready to think that hard until at least 10:00.<\/p>\n
Think about how much time I would save on inane phone calls and arguments with the lawn guy if only they would \u201cplay the game.\u201d <\/p>\n
I\u2019m really not as dumb as I guess I must look and\/or sound. Tired and distracted do not make me a complete idiot. They simply make me sound like one. I can\u2019t help that, at least not today. <\/p>\n
This is my new mission for the day. I\u2019m going to teach my game to all the parents in the world so that they too can make an end run around their children\u2019s arguments. Parents aren\u2019t as completely clueless as our children seem to think. Disagree with me?
