With all the talk on the news and on the blogs about our impending financial ruin, I have begun stocking up on non-perishables. We have a financial emergency fund, and now we will have a food one as well. I know it seems a little over the top, but what if the Computer Guy were suddenly unemployed? How long would it take for him to find a new job? (It took 6 months to find the one he has.) Having some food put back would definitely help us to stretch our money a little further.<\/p>\n
I also talked to my grandmother who kept remarking that this sure seems a lot like 1930. She said that she wished he folks had put some food away in 1930 because it would have helped during the difficult months that were ahead. She\u2019s a smart cookie. I usually try and take her advice on most things. <\/p>\n
It also just seemed like another one of those crazy \u201cbig family\u201d things, like making our own laundry detergent, that we should be doing. There are months when money is tighter than we\u2019d like anyway, and it would be nice to have a little extra to help out when we have to pay for big ticket items like #2\u2019s braces.<\/p>\n
Okay, let me be honest here. I\u2019m storing food for all of these reasons and also because the president scares the bejeebers out of me. Our quick descent in socialism is making me very nervous about the economic future of our country, and the vitriol being leveled at the octuplet\u2019s mom has me worried about the public perception of big families. Taken all together, self-sufficiency during difficult times is starting to look good. <\/p>\n
Am I being paranoid? Perhaps. Is it unreasonable. It\u2019s possible that it is. I\u2019m pregnant, and pregnant women are not the most logical people on earth most of the time. Admit it though, it\u2019s just possible that I\u2019m right and you need to be stocking your pantry, too. It wouldn\u2019t kill you, and it might get you over the next little rough spot that comes your way.<\/p>\n
