She sat in the pew next to me, occasionally glancing at the first Station of the Cross.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s that?\u201d She finally asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s Jesus.\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Jesus. Yes\u2026\u2026and who\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s Pilate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes\u2026.Pilate.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at the image for a while, and then said \u201cJesus is hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, baby, He is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOooh\u2026Poor Jesus.\u201d She crooned in her baby voice, before cocking her head to the side and stating matter-of-factly \u201cPilate is hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned around to look more fully at her. \u201cHe is?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, yes,\u201d she said with her eyes fixed on the villain\u2019s face. \u201cHe\u2019s sad and scared. It makes him hurt\u2026..Poor Pilate.\u201d<\/p>\n

By then, Mass was over and it was time for us to leave. As we exited the pew, I genuflected and told her \u201cC\u2019mon, Wendy, kneel and say good-bye to Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n

She bent her knees squatting in a toddler-esque curtsy, then ran off after her father. As she was halfway down the aisle, she turned back towards the First Station and waved \u201cBye, Pilate.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she continued galumphing after the boys, I turned to look at Pilate\u2019s face. He did indeed look sad and scared.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that when you stood before God\u2019s throne, that he was as merciful as a two-year-old.\u201d I told the weary man in the picture.<\/p>\n

I grabbed my purse and followed my family. As\u00a0 I reached the door, I stopped and\u00a0 glanced back at him over my shoulder, and I\u00a0 sighed, \u201cI hope, when I stand before Him, that He\u2019s that merciful with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
