What follows is their conversation. My comments are in blue, the rest are them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">So, what do you think she was really like? Not the statues, but the real person?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI think she was beautiful, peaceful, and quiet like the pictures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat? No way. I think she had ugly feet like in the picture over the mantel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/458\/2014\/12\/IMG_10381-e1418955517426.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3446\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/458\/2014\/12\/IMG_10381-e1418955517426-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1038[1]\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has ugly feet? Why would she have ugly feet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuh. Because people walked everywhere back then. <em>In sandals. <\/em>Sandals don\u2019t protect your feet. Trust me. They were ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/458\/2014\/12\/mary.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-3447\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/458\/2014\/12\/mary.jpg\" alt=\"mary\" width=\"245\" height=\"159\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was beautiful! She had blue eyes and long yellow hair\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo she didn\u2019t. She was Jew. Jews don\u2019t look like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Don\u2019t you remember the propaganda stuff from Germany? Brown hair, brown eyes, big noses\u2026 I\u2019m sure they exaggerated the nose part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom? Do Jews have big noses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cSome do. Some don\u2019t. They\u2019re like everyone else. There\u2019s variety. Why don\u2019t you Google \u2018Middle Eastern Jews\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c\u2026They\u2019re brown-ish. With curly-ish hair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do people paint her white if she was brown-ish with brown hair and eyes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait? Does that mean that Jesus was brown-ish too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah. He got all of His human DNA from his mom. If she was brown-ish then so was He.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(((Silence)))<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like brown eyes. Especially the brown kind that gets crinkly at the sides when you smile. I\u2019m pretty sure that Mary had the crinkle kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she had a good laugh. Not the mom kind of laugh, but the loud-ish and funny kind that makes you laugh. The kind of laugh that\u2019s funnier than the joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cSo you think she was funny?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDefinitely funny.\u201d There were unanimous head-nods at this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod likes joyful. He would never give his Son to someone who wasn\u2019t funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember the way that Elizabeth ran out to meet her, all excited? You don\u2019t run out the hug someone who\u2019s not fun to be around. You watch them from the window and sigh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think her teeth were crooked, at least a gap or overlap. No braces mean wonky teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what if they were crooked? She still had a good smile!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201d &lt;&lt;&lt;sigh&gt;&gt;&gt; I\u2019ll bet she has the good kind of mom smoosh that you can snuggle into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo way. She was like 14. 14-year-olds don\u2019t have mom-smoosh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was 14?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUgh. 14-year-old girls cry. Like..a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously? Jesus had a crying mom? That\u2019s the worst kind of mom. No offense, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cEwww\u2026they have zits too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary had acne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cHormones happen to everyone. Mother of God or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI don\u2019t like this game. Ugly feet and acne are not a person you make statues of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure they are. You just leave out the ugly parts. It\u2019s like Photoshop or filters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cOther than acne and crooked teeth. What was she <em>like?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSassy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cReally?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis angel stands in front of her and says God sent him and she says \u2018Why would God send you to <em>me<\/em>?\u2019 She doesn\u2019t even offer him water or a place to sit down. Hospitality was a big thing back then. She ignored all of that, and told him to explain himself. That\u2019s sass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she bossed God around. He was her kid, but she knew he was God and she still had to tell him to clean his room and stuff. You can\u2019t be totally meek and mild, and still be bossing Jesus to do his chores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she didn\u2019t care what people thought. Not in that snap-your-fingers way, but in the I-Know-I\u2019m-Right way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she cared for what people thought, she\u2019d have never agreed to be Jesus\u2019s mom. They could have stoned her, but she didn\u2019t even care. She just said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cSo sum it up for me. Mary was..\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cJewish.
