**I\u2019ll be writing about homeschooling here every Monday.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a cool thing for the top of the post yet, but I will soon!** <\/span><\/p>\n

When I started homeschooling my eldest 1,000+ years ago, I couldn\u2019t imagine why I\u2019d ever need a chalk\/white board.\u00a0 I only had one student in each grade, and could sit next to them and say stuff much more easily than standing in front of them.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t a \u201creal teacher\u201d after all, just a mom who owned the teacher manuals and knew how to read them.\u00a0 Plus, those boards were ugly.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to live forever in a house which looked like a school.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It worked really well for my eldest who thrives on a conversational learning style.\u00a0 The more we talk about something, the better she gets it.\u00a0 That\u2019s a wonderful thing for a mom who loves to talk. I thought this was how our homeschool would work, forever a dialogue between my students and me.<\/p>\n

When my #2 started school, we struggled a bit.\u00a0 I\u2019m not even going to pretend that somehow it was as easy with him as with the first.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter how often I explained things or showed him on his papers, it just wouldn\u2019t click.\u00a0 We spent way too many years fighting against each other and completely frustrated before I realized the problem\u2026I was trying to talk to a visual person.<\/p>\n

Things just don\u2019t seem to resonate with him when I say them, and the pages of his notebook aren\u2019t large enough to grab his imagination\u2026but put it on the whiteboard and Watch Out!<\/p>\n

Writing it large seems to catch hold of something in his brain and the information I\u2019m giving him just seems to last.\u00a0 The boy who would barely eke out D\u2019s on his math started getting high B\u2019s or low A\u2019s on a regular basis.\u00a0 He now does the entire math assignment, problem by problem, on the white board\u2026and asks for more.\u00a0 The standing and moving appeal to the boy in him, and the white board makes his brain all kinds of happy.<\/p>\n

12 years ago, I said \u201cI may be homeschooling, but I refuse to spend my life living in a house that looks like a classroom.\u201d\u00a0 Today I\u2019d tell you, \u201cThe whole world is their classroom, why not give them whatever it takes to make it work?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
