In case the title wasn\u2019t warning enough, I\u2019m going to use the word dumba** in this post because that\u2019s the way I talk in real life. If you\u2019re offended by words like dumba**, this probably isn\u2019t the day for you. I\u2019ll see you tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n
I wish that I could blame this morning on lack of sleep, or sick children, or a wild weekend in Cabo\u2026I can\u2019t. This just is what it was.<\/span><\/p>\n
Thank goodness I checked the calendar on my phone last night, or I would have totally missed my eldest son\u2019s orthodontic appointment at 9:00 this morning. It\u2019s weird that I checked it, because that\u2019s forethought which is extraordinarily unlike me, but I did so I didn\u2019t panic this morning.<\/p>\n
I was up at 6:00 when I saw him stagger out of his room, so I whispered \u201cYou have an orthodontist appointment at 9:00. Go back to bed.\u201d He flashed me a thumbs-up sign and turned back towards his room.<\/p>\n
Sometime after 8:00, I saw him again. He was tying his uniform tie while also juggling his shoes. (He\u2019s very talented.) He grinned at me with\u00a0 the well-rested look that I usually only see on the weekends, and said, \u201cThis is the one thing I miss about homeschooling. I love it when I can sleep until I\u2019m done.\u201d<\/p>\n
As we backed out of the driveway for the 5 minute drive to the dental office, he was chattering away about the things he was learning in Chinese and amazing me with his linguistic skills.<\/p>\n
When we pulled into the parking lot, I told him to go in ahead of me. I wanted to let my phone charge up a little more before going inside.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t long before he came back out of the office with a frown on his face. \u201cMom, they need to talk to you inside.\u201d<\/p>\n
The front desk staff met me with puzzled frowns. \u201cMrs Frech, why are you here today?\u201d<\/p>\n
I flipped my phone calendar around and showed them the notation \u201cD ortho 9 am\u201d<\/p>\n
The office lady shook her head. \u201cTomorrow. His appointment is at 9 tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Crap. (In the interest of honesty and full disclosure. This is not the first time this has happened to me at the orthodontist. It\u2019s not even the second\u2026)<\/p>\n
I apologized profusely for the mix up and went back to the car, already mentally composing the \u201cplease excuse my son\u2026\u201d note in my head. That\u2019s what I <\/em>miss most about homeschooling. When I mess up now, people know<\/em>.<\/p>\n
As we got to the school parking lot, I asked him for a pen and a piece of paper. I\u2019m a writer. I can do this. (That\u2019s what I kept telling myself. I wasn\u2019t convinced.)<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease excise (my son) for his tardiness this morning\u2026.\u201d and then I stopped.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow do I write \u2018please excuse my son for being late because his mom is a dumba**\u2019?\u201d I asked out loud.<\/p>\n
He had no answers, so I began writing it again and again. It was the honest excuse, but I wasn\u2019t sure that I wanted the fact that I was a dumba** to be a part of his permanent record.<\/p>\n
Finally, I gave up and went inside.<\/p>\n
\u201cHi,\u201d I said matter-of-factly to the office lady. \u201cI need to drop my son off and give you some kind of excuse, but I\u2019m not sure what to write. I kept him home for an orthodontic appointment that it turns out is tomorrow. By the way, he\u2019ll be late tomorrow too. I just don\u2019t know how to write down \u2018his mom is a dumbass who can\u2019t use a phone calendar\u2019 without it sounding like I\u2019m actually a dumba**\u2026although I\u2019m beginning to think that maybe I am.\u201d<\/p>\n
God bless her, she laughed.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust write down he was late for a family emergency and leave a phone number in case the principal has more questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFamily emergency?\u201d I asked her. \u201cYou really think this qualifies as a family emergency?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSure,\u201d she answered. \u201cIf your mom is a dumba**, it\u2019s kind of an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n
True enough.<\/p>\nPoor kid is stuck with me for a mom<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
