I\u2019m thankful for: <\/p>\n
- \n
- The stillness of the house in the wee hours of the morning.\u00a0 All I can hear is the hum of the refrigerator\u00a0 and the clacking of the keyboard.\u00a0 I love the calm of everyone else being tucked in bed and sleeping.<\/li>\n
- Electricity \u2013 Let\u2019s be honest, we\u2019re never grateful enough for that modern miracle.\u00a0 A hundred years or so ago, my being up this early would have been a lot of work \u2013lighting candles and handwriting this by their meager light. I\u2019m thankful that I can flip a switch and have quiet time to myself instead of lying there in the dark<\/li>\n
- My sleeping husband who pulled the waking baby into the warmth of his chest, where she settled down and fell back to sleep, so that I could get up and write.<\/li>\n
- The friends and neighbors who are coming over to share our giant turkey.\u00a0 They are saving us from having left-overs for the next month.<\/li>\n
- Brownie Mix \u2013 my crazy kids don\u2019t really care for pie \u2013so I\u2019m making brownies this morning \u2014 from a box \u2014 and they\u2019ll be thrilled.\u00a0 Hooray for box mixes!<\/li>\n
- That we could buy the turkey already dead, plucked, and ready to go.\u00a0 I\u2019ve helped kill and clean chickens before \u2026 I can\u2019t imagine that turkeys are any better.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
6:15 AM<\/p>\n
- \n
- Pre-made pie crust.\u00a0 Yes, my mother taught me how to make them.\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t want to.<\/li>\n
- Measuring cups.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even want to think about trying to cook all this food if I had to eyeball the measurements.<\/li>\n
- Green-bean casserole.\u00a0 It\u2019s what Thanksgiving dinner is all about to me.\u00a0 Forget your turkey and mashed potatoes, pass me some savory goodness.\u00a0 I know that there are a lot of people who don\u2019t like it.\u00a0 Those people are wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- For dishwashers which make it so easy to take a break at the end of the first round of cooking and get everything back to clean before the next round begins.<\/li>\n
- Little boy hugs and not-quite-awake-yet voices <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- Early morning cartoons to keep the early-rising children occupied and quiet.<\/li>\n
- Facebook and Instant Messaging so that all the up-early-and-cooking moms can chat and keep each other company<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
7:30 AM<\/p>\n
- \n
- My sweet neighbor who said \u201cLet\u2019s go for a walk in the morning before we get to some serious cooking.\u201d<\/li>\n
- That she\u2019s bringing mimosas for after the walk.\u00a0 I think Thanksgiving cooking has to be more fun with alcohol.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
7:45 AM<\/p>\n
- \n
- Hot showers that cleanse the body and renew the spirit<\/li>\n
- A hot mug of tea \u2014 up since 5:00\u2026caffeine\u2026\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
8:00 AM<\/p>\n
- \n
- A moment to stop and pray<\/li>\n
- The baby who still wants to nurse and forces me to stop for a moment and be still.\u00a0 A perfect time for talking to God, and for kissing little baby fingers<\/li>\n
- Fat little baby hands\u00a0<\/li>\n
- The 8 year old who begged to be able to watch the Macy\u2019s parade this morning and is sitting enthralled in front of the TV <\/li>\n
- Satellites that can bring the New York City Thanksgiving parade to our house outside of Dallas, Texas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
9:20 AM<\/p>\n
- \n
- Clean bathrooms and a husband who gets them that way<\/li>\n
- Our \u201cThankful Tablecloth\u201d and the memories it holds<\/li>\n
- The smell of a clean house and a food that\u2019s been cooking<\/li>\n
- Enough food to cook that it will take a day and a half to prepare it all.\u00a0 There are hungry people in the world.\u00a0 We are blessed indeed!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
9:45 AM<\/p>\n
- \n
- The big kids helping the little ones get dressed<\/li>\n
- The older boys asking \u201cWhat do you need me to do, Mom?\u201d<\/li>\n
- A day that dawned comfortably warm and lovely, so that we can go outside to play\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- \n
- For neighbors who have extra meat thermometers and don\u2019t mind letting me borrow one when mine goes missing<\/li>\n
- For roasting pans large enough to hold a 22 lb turkey<\/li>\n
- Those little crunchy onion thingys that go on green bean casserole (Have I mentioned how I adore the green bean casserole?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
11:10 AM<\/p>\n

- For prep work done and food in the oven<\/li>\n
- Big sister hugs when the baby gets hurt<\/li>\n
- Enthusiastic 11 year old helpers<\/li>\n
- The 5 year old singing \u201cToday is Thanksgiving! Today is Thanksgiving! Today id Thanksgiving!\u201d<\/li>\n
- Real butter on the table\u2026mmmm\u2026butter\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- \n
- Quiet confidences of teenage boys that just make your soul sing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- \n
- The one year old learning to sign \u201cMore\u201d just in time for Thanksgiving dinner<\/li>\n
- Mounds of potatoes peeled, which can only mean one thing\u2026MASHED POTATOES!!! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
1:30 PM<\/p>\n
- \n
- Glitter eyeliner that makes me feel festive<\/li>\n
- A baby who\u2019s had a nap<\/li>\n
- A dog that got walked so she could nap in the corner<\/li>\n
- A turkey turning a beautiful mahogany color<\/li>\n
- The smell in my house..oh. my. goodness\u2026the amazing smell of Thanksgiving<\/li>\n
- Aluminum foil that keeps the bird from over-cooking<\/li>\n
- The peace of today <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
- <\/ul>\n
- Seeing #4 walk around on knees that don\u2019t hurt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- The sound of my children\u2019s voices saying Grace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- Full bellies<\/li>\n
- Sleepy children<\/li>\n
- Happy guests<\/li>\n
- Apple pie<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Happy Thanksgiving, Y\u2019all!\u00a0 I\u2019m going to go take a nap.<\/p>\n
