Last year at Thanksgiving time, I was holding a new baby and trying to create new family traditions just for us.<\/i>\u00a0 This year, I\u2019m just missing my family.\u00a0 It\u2019s funny, because they\u2019re not even mine, they\u2019re the Computer Guy\u2019s, but they\u2019re the family I had for 17 years\u2026and I miss them.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
We were supposed to have my in laws here this week, my husband\u2019s parents, his brother and sister in law\u2026.they had to cancel their plans and it\u2019s just us again this year.\u00a0 I keep looking for my thankfulness in a house that still doesn\u2019t feel like home and the people we love so far away, and I\u2019m just homesick.\u00a0 I want nothing more than to be standing in my Oklahoma kitchen, with things bubbling on the stove, and the Computer Guy\u2019s relatives popping in for a quick visit.<\/p>\n
I want to stand in the freezing drizzle with his Aunt K on Thursday night in anticipation of Black Friday sales.\u00a0 I want to watch his grandmother lightly tapping the baby\u2019s chin until she smiles.\u00a0 I want to eat his Aunt J\u2019s green bean casserole, my favorite thing on the Thanksgiving table.\u00a0 (Yum!)\u00a0 Mostly though, I want to hear the voices of family tell the stories we know.\u00a0 I want to feel that sense of belonging which only comes from family that know you and loves you well.<\/p>\n
For the girl with not much family, to have one I miss so much is the unexpected gift in my life.\u00a0 When I married my Computer Guy, so very long ago, there were not so many people on \u201cmy side\u201d of the church.\u00a0 The ushers were told to just even it out, but in the pictures\u2026my side was pitifully small.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a lot of family, and didn\u2019t really expect to ever have one..<\/p>\n

his family grew to become my own.\u00a0 I never could have suspected, as a terribly young new bride, exactly how much I would come to love them\u2026or how hard it would be to leave.\u00a0 As much as my heart aches to not be there this week making the traditional family dishes and hearing the traditional family stories, I am more grateful that I can say for the gift of them.\u00a0 For 17 years I have been blessed to be counted among their numbers, and for that<\/i> I am truly thankful.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
