It\u2019s the 4th of July and I have a houseful of teenagers.\u00a0 My eldest daughter\u2019s friends are here until tomorrow morning, on their way home from summertime activities. It\u2019s fun to be the house in the middle, the halfway point.\u00a0 It means that we have had more company in the past year than in the previous 15 years of our married lives combined! I know lots of people complain about teenagers, but I like them.\u00a0 They are full of energy and fun, laughter and teasing.\u00a0 There is such a different air when they are in our house.<\/p>\n

The funny part for me is watching #4.\u00a0 She has quite the crush on her big sister\u2019s bff.\u00a0 He frequently declares her to be the favorite of #1\u2019s siblings and treats her with the familiar teasing of someone who is frequently around children. It\u2019s music to her shy little heart, and she sighs deeply when he walks by.\u00a0 There is something completely wonderful in little-girl crushes.\u00a0 It\u2019s hero worship and romance all rolled up in rapt attention and big eyes.\u00a0 She thinks he is wonderful<\/i> and he doesn\u2019t even notice it at all. He\u2019s 17 and she is barely 8.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He and his brother are at our house until tomorrow morning.\u00a0 Long enough for my girl to sit in silent hero worship, and be teased into laughing a bit.\u00a0 She\u2019s unbearably shy and doesn\u2019t often open up to older people, especially when they\u2019re male.<\/p>\n

Little girl crushes may seem such a small part of childhood, but they are, in fact, practice for the years to come.\u00a0 If the boys who capture her fancy continue to be nice guys who tease, play and aren\u2019t afraid to look silly?\u00a0 I think she\u2019ll do alright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
