\u201cIt could be worse, it could be ..(fill in the blank)..\u201d I\u2019ve lost count of the number of times people have said this to us in the last few months.\u00a0 They don\u2019t know what to say and are trying to look on the bright side of something awful.\u00a0 They are trying to offer us a twisted kind of hope. I wish they would stop.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt least it\u2019s not cancer.\u201d This is the most frequent one we hear.\u00a0 Cancer is a kind of scary that everyone knows.\u00a0 JRA is the unknown to them.\u00a0 They just don\u2019t understand, and I know that if I do anything other than smile I will cry, or scream, or cry and scream.\u00a0 It won\u2019t be pretty.<\/p>\n
In my mind I know that there are a lot of \u201cworse\u201d scenarios.\u00a0 Forgive me if I don\u2019t see them right now.\u00a0 I have a different sound track in my head. The ones I hear are the \u201cMight Have Beens\u201d and \u201cthe Sounds of Her in Pain\u201d and they break my heart. I have become short sighted until all I can see is the tragedy in my own household.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have time to play \u201cwhat if\u201d.\u00a0 There is neither time nor energy to spend on imagined catastrophes.<\/p>\n
Could this be worse? Yes. Are there a million other nightmare scenarios in which this would be the better option? I don\u2019t know, but I\u2019m sure there are a few. Would a better person be sifting through all of it to find the silver lining? Absolutely.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not that better person.<\/p>\n
The fact remains that dead would be worse.\u00a0 The rest of it is firmly in the Land of Suck. Pointing out all the other ways in which this could be bad or worse doesn\u2019t help.\u00a0 It\u2019s just playing with words. That it\u2019s not the worst you<\/i> can think of doesn\u2019t make it any easier.\u00a0 The fact that you would say so out loud just makes you one less person we can turn to.<\/p>\n
So what do you say?\u00a0 What can you say to parents in the Land of Suck\u201d?\u00a0 You can say, \u201cThat\u2019s awful.\u201d, \u201cHow horrible.\u201d, or even \u201cWow.\u00a0 That sucks.\u201d and I with that I will completely agree.<\/p>\n
