I spent several hours this past weekend making homecoming mums with my eldest.\u00a0 A ton of glitter, flowers, cowbells and ribbons later we were done.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are awful,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cPeople actually wear them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u201dYes!\u201d I gasped with glee.\u00a0 \u201cThey wear them and love them.\u00a0 Welcome to Texas, baby!\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve never been to the Lone Star State (and I feel sorry for you if this is true) then you can not possibly begin to imagine the wonder of the Texas homecoming mum.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have them, too.\u201d A friend of mine from Oklahoma said, clearly tired of hearing me wax rhapsodic about all things Texan.<\/p>\n

\u201cDescribe them.\u201d I challenged her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a big chrysanthemum with a couple ribbons, a corsage, but kinda ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh,\u201d I answered, \u201cthen where do you put the battery pack?\u201d<\/p>\n

I know what she was referring to, something almost tasteful.\u00a0 Something a little
like this: <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That might be fine in the rest of the country, but any girl in Texas who wore that to the homecoming game would be pitied and her date would find himself single for life.<\/p>\n

You see, we don\u2019t do small here.\u00a0 We like tacky and big and completely obnoxious.\u00a0 Baseball caps should be encrusted with rhinestones, hair should be big and then tease it up a little more\u2026just take your definition of over-the-top and then push the envelope a little further over the edge.<\/p>\n

So what are Texas girls wearing to homecoming?\u00a0 A simple little something like this:<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Isn\u2019t it fantastic?\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet it has a dozen cowbells in those ribbons.\u00a0 Spectacular!<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t just our Texas belles who wear them.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t leave the boys out, so they put them on garters and wear them on their arms.<\/p>\n

I loved living in Oklahoma for 17 years, and thought it had become my home, but this summer we moved back to Texas and then football season began.\u00a0 Somewhere between the hot glue gun and the string of blinking lights I realized that I was once again among my people.\u00a0 The folks here have a healthy appreciation for kitsch and tacky.\u00a0 They know these things are ridiculous and over the top, and love them all the more for it.\u00a0 Life needs humor, and nowhere is that more on display that a Friday night game in a small Texas town.<\/p>\n

My 7 year old daughter has whole-heartedly embraced this philosophy of life, but the teenager remains a complete skeptic. I give her until the homecoming game next Friday night before she realizes that instead of being embarrassed to wear such a tacky thing, she\u2019s be missing out if she didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I hope she learns to relax and not take herself quite so seriously.\u00a0 She wants to be cool and these creations would not be cool with any of her Okie friends, but she\u2019s learning a lesson from the Texas girls she knows.\u00a0 Life is short.\u00a0 You can spend it trying to be cool, or you can learn to laugh\u2026.so laugh because it\u2019s much more fun that way. <\/p>\n

I know y\u2019all are itching for one more picture, so here\u2019s the homecoming court:<\/p>\n
