This morning, we had preschool playgroup in the neighborhood.\u00a0 As I walked across the street with my two youngest boys, I said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to the house with the red car in the driveway.\u201d
#5 gave me a puzzled look and replied, \u201cWhat did you say?\u201d
me: \u201cThe house with the red car.\u00a0 That\u2019s where we\u2019re going.\u201d
#5: \u201cOh.\u201d pause.\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u201d
me. \u201cSee the red car?\u00a0 That\u2019s the house where playgroup is.\u201d
#5: \u201cI don\u2019t know, Mommy.\u201d
me: sigh \u201cJust hold my hand and follow me.\u201d
#5: \u201cOkay, but can I just hold your hand?\u201d<\/p>\n

Seriously.<\/p>\n

When we got home after an hour of playtime, I told #3 to get out his math book and a calculator.\u00a0 (Yay calculator day!)
#3: \u201cMy math book and what?\u201d
me: \u201ccalculator\u201d
#3: \u201cI don\u2019t have that thing, I think\u2026..\u201d He looked at me as if I were a crazy woman.
me: \u201cA calculator?\u00a0 Then get my phone.\u00a0 It has a calculator app.\u201d
#3: \u201cGet your what?\u201d
me: \u201cPhone. It can be a calculator.\u201d
#3: Why would I want your phone?\u00a0 I don\u2019t need to call anyone.\u201d
me: slowly \u201cIt has a calculator on it.\u00a0 Get my phone.\u201d
#3: \u201cNever mind mom.\u00a0 I can use #2\u2019s phone.\u00a0 It has a calculator on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This has been my day. With every child except #6, although he has stared at me dumbly for most of the afternoon so there\u2019s no telling what he\u2019s hearing.<\/p>\n
