My sweet 9 year old spends every afternoon at his best friend\u2019s house.\u00a0 His friend\u2019s mom, Mrs C, is as close to a miracle worker as anyone I\u2019ve ever met.\u00a0 She can get my pickiest eater to try anything.\u00a0 I\u2019ve begged her to share her secret, but she just smiles and shrugs.\u00a0 \u201cI just ask him if he wants to try a bit,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s no way it\u2019s that easy.\u00a0 I live with this kid and I know that he won\u2019t even try the aroma of new food without giving me a look that clearly says he\u2019s sure he\u2019s about to be poisoned.\u00a0 (For the record, I\u2019ve never poisoned anyone that I know of.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure I would know that\u2026.right?)<\/p>\n
I had no idea that she had secret super powers until he came home and said, \u201cHave you ever tried calamari? Did you know it\u2019s squid?\u00a0 Mrs C fed me some and it was so good.\u00a0 Is that meatloaf for dinner? With mashed potatoes?\u00a0 I\u2019m not eating that.\u00a0 It\u2019s weird.\u201d<\/p>\n
A week later, he said, \u201cDid you know that duck is good?\u00a0 I ate some at Mrs C\u2019s house.\u00a0 She fed us a snack of duck with a salad.\u00a0 Is that chicken with rice?\u00a0 No thanks.\u00a0 It\u2019s weird.\u201d\u00a0 (She feeds them salad for a snack and the kids love it.\u00a0 I tried that once.\u00a0 Nothing doing over here).<\/p>\n
The next week it was shrimp that he\u2019d helped to clean.\u00a0 Then she got him to eat sushi.\u00a0\u00a0 He\u2019s tried alligator and moose at her house and loved them.\u00a0 (Her husband goes hunting all over the country.)\u00a0<\/p>\n
He returns to our house, lifts the lid off the pot, crinkles his nose at the perfectly normal and delicious dinner I\u2019ve made and sighs.\u00a0 (I really am a good cook.\u00a0 Other people have said so.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just me.)<\/p>\n
I wish I knew her trick.\u00a0 There has to be more to it than she asks him<\/i>.\u00a0 I ask him too, but for me the answer is no.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s the magic air on the other side of the creek.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s that she is kind and nobody would ever accuse her of poisoning people.\u00a0 (I swear\u2026I never have.\u00a0 What have you heard?) Maybe it\u2019s that\u2026.I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
