This past Friday when I picked #3 up from school, he had a little smile on his face.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s funny?\u201d I asked him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not cool.\u201d He told me.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think you\u2019re cool.\u201d I answered my coolest child.\u00a0 (If he\u2019s not cool there\u2019s no hope for the rest of us.)<\/p>\n
He rolled his eyes.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re my mom.\u00a0 You have to think I\u2019m cool.\u00a0 I\u2019m not though. The cool kids told me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I glanced in his direction to see how he felt about that.\u00a0 Stupid kids.\u00a0 How could they miss how wonderful he is?<\/p>\n
\u201cI hung out with them for the last two days so that I could be cool, too.\u00a0 Today at recess they told me I was a geek so I can\u2019t hang out with them any more.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do they think you\u2019re a geek?\u201d I asked already dreading the answer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have weird white spots on my face that look like inside out freckles.\u00a0 That makes me a geek.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care though, because I like them.\u00a0 They make my face look different from everyone else\u2019s face.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHuh\u201d was my witty reply.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s okay with me though, because after two days I know that what makes them cool is that they\u2019re bored, and bored is kind of boring.\u00a0 I tried to get them to play something, but they would only huff at me.\u00a0 Then I told them that I was going to play anyway and they said \u2018Whatever.\u2019\u00a0 I\u2019d rather be a geek who plays stuff than a cool kid who stands around being bored.\u00a0 Being a geek is more fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
